There are only 24 proper official Prince albums

Who can't name them all correctly?

Remember us nerdy types have seperate categories for our Prince and the Revolution, Prince and the New Power Generation, New Power Generation, NPG Orchestra, Madhouse, The Family, The Time, Sheila E, Vanity 6, Appolonia 6, Soundtracks and albums by Various Artists.

By the way where do U put your 7 prince albums if U keep everything alphabetically? Presumably under S for Symbol?

Always tricky to come up with a rock-solid consistent way of identifying the number of Prince albums. For instance, in Nouveau's list, does the second Rave album count as a new unique album? Isn't it just a remix album with an alternate tracklist? Aren't The Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse simply compilations of tracks mostly previously released individually? If compilations count, shouldn't The Hits collection and Best Of Prince and the semi-offically released Ultimate count also? Is CNOTE an album or is it simply an EP? Is Newpower Soul really an NPG album when Prince sings all the tracks?

It's like in the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy the answer to the meaning of life was 42 or something. The answer to how many Prince albums there are is 24 and NO, prince albums do not count. If anyone would like to list those separately there are 7 to name.

It all depends on what your definition of "proper official Prince album" is.

I just tried using various different criteria to see what would make that number
of albums, but I couldn't find any consistant criteria that would produce '24'.

So many variables and possibilities...

You could count albums soley credited to "Prince", or you could include ones
credited to "Prince and the Revolution" and "Prince and the New Power Generation"
as well, or ones credited to "prince" too. You could count download-only
releases, or NPGMC exclusives. You could count the various WB compilations, you
could count "The Hits 1", "The Hits 2" and "The Hits / The B-Sides" as 3 releases
or just one. You could count "Crystal Ball" and "The Truth" as just one release
or as two. The variable criteria goes on...

Judging by the wording of your opening post, it sounds like you're looking for
a list of albums soley credited to "Prince" (not including any albums credited
to "Prince and the Revolution", "Prince and the New Power Generation" or "prince").
Inwhich case tha answer would be 22
or 20 (if you only include albums made available to buy in record stores etc.)
or 18 (if you count the 3 "Hits" releases as one)

If anyone can do it you can Boris. Just focus now. Don't include any album twice if it has exactly the same stuff on in the exact same order. And in my world Ultimate Prince is not official cos it was withdrawn before it was supposed to be sold. It's the Black Album all over again. That didn't become official until 1994. The stuff he did before his first album can't be official Prince either cos it was put out without his consent and think twice before you include something that should really go under Various Artists or Soundtracks.

To make 24 we only want albums soely credited to Prince. Do or do not, there is no try.

In that case, I would have to say that your "24" is in error,
and the correct answer is actually "20".

1. Prince - For You (1978)
2. Prince - Prince (1979)
3. Prince - Dirty Mind (1980)
4. Prince - Controversy (1981)
5. Prince - 1999 (1982)
6. Prince - Sign O' the Times (1987)
7. Prince - Lovesexy (1988)
8. Prince - Batman (1989)
9. Prince - Graffiti Bridge (1990)
10. Prince - The Hits / The B-Sides (1993)
11. Prince - Come (1994)
12. Prince - "the black album" (1994)
13. Prince - The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale (1999)
14. Prince - The Very Best of Prince (2001)
15. Prince - The Rainbow Children (2001)
16. Prince - One Nite Alone... (2002)
17. Prince - Xpectation (2003)
18. Prince - N.E.W.S. (2003)
19. Prince - Musicology (2004)
20. Prince – 3121 (2006)

as these were the only albums officially soley credited to "Prince"

The other 4 I included were the internet only releases.

One Nite Alone
The Choclate Invasion
The Slaughterhouse
C-Note

NPGMC was good for something. I still prefer buying my new albums at the Wrecka stow tho.

Wasn't Xpectation an internet only release also and did they press some official copies of ONA piano and voice?

No, "One Nite Alone... Live!" is credited to "Prince and the New Power Generation"
and so is "C-Note".
"The Chocolate Invasion" and "The Slaughterhouse" are not credited to anyone,
(as these are compilations of Prince, NPG, and prince tracks.)

Hope I can sleep now after digesting all that.

I suppose I'll have to put TCI and SH under various artists. Life as a Prince fan is tooo complicated.

Isn't 1999 technically Prince and the Revolution. It says it backwards on the album cover in small writing doesn't it?

Or is it still technically Prince on his own, but by this point he had his live band as the Revolution, but 1999, despite him writing '& the revolution' on the cover, is still a 'Prince' album?

No true... you can check for yourself...

Go pick up your copy of ONA Live, have a look at the packaging...who is it
credited to? Nowhere on the packaging does it say just "Prince". It clearly
says on the spine of the CD "Prince and the New Power Generation - One Nite
Alone...Live!"

Also, if you check the download section of the NPGMC, you'll notice that
"The Chocolate Invasion", "The Slaughterhouse" and "C-Note" are not actually
credited to anyone. They are simply titled, with no artist. However, when
C-Note was originally made available in 2002 to club members, the files were
labelled "Prince and the NPG", and the emails sent out to members mentions
the tracks as being by "Prince and the NPG".

Case closed wink
