This thread is for speculation as to why Prince likes to pretty himself up, from the "because he feels like it" to the overwrought, overthought hypotheses.

So: Why DOES he wear such thick makeup? What he dons is far beyond what is necessary for a video or shoot and certainly isn't what most male (and even most female) celebs wear.

How about those heels? The pretty, girly clothes? Hell -some of those don't just look like women's clothes, they are.

How about those cute lil waist-cincher things he was so fond of in the 90's? Gave him curves entirely unnatural for his gender. Visually interesting, no doubt.

There's a huge, obvious difference between when he gets his makeup done by a stylist/makeup artist for a video or shoot and when he presumably does it himself, like when he's out on the town and happens to get his picture taken. Kind of a heavy-handed application, most times.

Because Prince was probably influenced by the glam era in the 1970s when he was growing up. He also came out on the heels of the disco era and became popular when punk rock, new wave, and other things were popular. Back then, the wilder you looked, the better. Artists were individuals back then. The rest of the music industry stopped being individuals but a true individual always remains one. It's just what they are.

he obviously doesn't like what he sees in the mirror, and is hoping to improve it. Why does a woman wear makeup?...to hide blemishes, and accentuate what she likes. Prince is no different. as far as the heels, vertical challenged people look for every inch they an get

i dunno, all i know is it's f'd up, cuz if any other dude did half the shit he does i'd laugh my ass off at them, but when Prince does it, it's hott as hell!

I see the others as just following a trend and quitting when the trend was over. With Prince, I don't see it as a trend. He even wore heels when the rest of them weren't. With Prince, I see it as him discovering himself during the era and just continuing it. Women have always fixed their hair and worn make up and heels to enhance their appearance and probably always will. I see Prince doing the same.

Prince also comes from an era when stars looked and acted like actual stars. A good star is always looking like a star 24/7.

because he likes to look and the mirror and see beauty like myself..

i dunno why but I'm sure i don't want to see him without it rockin a white tee a caesar and air force ones like errybody else.

To paraphrase a quote I found a Google group about Prince, he has curves that women would pay thousands for, yet on Prince they are God-given.
