Whats the deal with this song besides being an awesome song, why is it on both Love Sexy & The Black Album? I dont really hear ny variations in them? Was P just 2 whacked on XTC 2 notice? hahaha

Im assuming it cause the Black Album, at the time in 1987, was shelved and bootlegged drastically, so maybe Prince wanted the best song from the derailed project to be on the next official one, Lovesexy. I could be wrong tho.

After cancelling The Black Album, Prince had to create a whole new album from scratch in a very short time. I should think he re-used When 2 R In Love because it was one less new song to create and didn't jibe with his new direction unlike the other songs on the Black album. I doubt Prince was aware of the bootlegging of the Black album only months after the pressings were supposedly all destroyed, so as far as he knew then no one or at least not many would have heard that track already, so it was still a new track.

What metalorange said, plus When 2 R In Love was the 'newest' song on TBA, so I can imagine that is why he held it over for Lovesexy (also because it's tender and isn't 'dark' like the rest of TBA).

You'll notice Prince often favours the newly recorded material to the older stuff on a project (Gett Off, Te Amo Corazon spring to mind).

It flows better on LS than it does on TBA.

Yes listen to the TBA the instrumentation is slightly more sparse, but just. The Lovesexy version version, may sound different as its hemmed in with more positve songs than being sandwiched between Dead On it and the very dark(but funky) Bob George.
U can also here the Lovesexy version on an extended single of the Scandalous Sex Suite.
For the record, this song is my all time favourite Prince song.

Its weak, watery and lame

and it has a tooth ache inducing saccharine ending that makes me want to throw up. thank God it fades out as quickly as it does

Absolutely a great song. One of my top favorite ballads.
