Is Prince vegan or vegetarian?

Just curious, where is Prince at with this these days? I know with Mayte, he was eating very healthy with no animal products..."nothing with parents". Anyone know?

he's been seen eating chicken and fish - he also served sushi (raw fish) at his 3121 "purple ticket" party this year. i think his vegan days are behind him.

Eating no animal products doesn't necessarily mean you're eating healthy...

i just didn't want to get into the whole meatie vs. veggie song'n'dance again...my only thing about prince being a veggie is that he's not one, but he'll accept awards for being one. he can eat little unicorn babies for all i care - just don't call yourself a vegan!

Btw, besides all that stuff like "Animal Kingdom" or "cow milk is for calfs" from around 1995-1997, has there ever been an official announcement by Prince that he is a vegan (in contrast to vegetarian)? Just wondering. Also, has he ever officially retired from being a vegan or veggie? And, to bring the lockdance closer, what is the role of the JWs in all that? biggrin

1. yeah, he was interviewed in a couple of magazines - i think "vegetarian times" and PETA's official magazine - and he referred to himself and mayte both as vegans.

2. he never "officially" retired from being a vegan, but when you let yourself be seen in public eating meat, it's kinda like saying you're straight and being seen doing the he-man cha-cha down at the fudgepot saloon on underwear night, if you get my meaning.

3. i don't know - i'm guessing it's not discouraged or encouraged.

Has this been substantiated that he's actually eaten meat?

there were some "seen and heard" human interest items in various newspapers during the time of the musicology tour in which mentions were made of prince dining in different restaurants, and the reports mentioned he was eating fish and chicken dishes. i need to find these articles - i posted them myself on the mainpage back when i was a mod - because they weren't gossipy "aha!" stories about prince eating meat...i think the reporters had no idea he was veggie or carnie or whatever, and were just reporting details.

With Prince I could see this being a very health related issue. Boy has trouble maintaining his weight and he never sleeps.

yeah

i'm not really invested in casting any kind of judgment on him being a lapsed vegetarian - i just think it's uncool when PETA gives him an award for being veg and it's not turned down. it's less about the practice and more about the dishonesty.

Yeah, I feel ya. But maybe he hadn't given it up when he accepted. I think I remember hearing that Prince went veggie as early as '87. If he just started eating meat again a few years ago, 15+ years of sticking with it is a long time to go. A lot of thought must've gone into the lifestyle change if he is indeed eating meat again. As wishy-washy as he can be, it seemed like one of the few practices/beliefs he was most dedicated to over the years.

the difference between then and now is that you actually hear about 'im eating now, as opposed to seeing that picture and assuming that he lived exclusively off of double-decker air sammiches and water back then.

yeah, again

he can eat cars if he wants. but if the anti-car-eating organization wants to honor him for not eating cars, there should be a statement from paisley park saying "hold up, these days i love me a mazda for lunch!"

i think for those of us who have made a lifetime commitment and deal with the challenges it brings every day for years, it's a little disheartening when someone fronts and gets accolades for it. especially when they're one of your favorite artists and someone you grew up looking up to.

he can do what he wants. it's just messed up. but as you like to say, welcome to the house of blah blah etc.

if you look real close at some of the pix from the BET awards, you'll see a few datsun crumbs around his mouth. nod
