Its interesting to see how many white people love Lisa and Wendy w/ Prince. It was a brilliant strategy to put them in his band. The white male controlled industry loved it and it made millions. Its all good. If he had been marketed as a Black guy w/ a Black band in the 80s, it would have limited his options and reach. So he freaked it and folx still can't stop talking about it. The only drawback is that to this day, so many people want to pretend hes anything but Black. Die hard fans delude themselves that hes some mixed race enigma instead of what he is - a Black man, period. A casual observer could see that. Purple Rain or UTCM are exhibit A. Its a non issue. If he wants some of the same commercial success that he had in the 80s, then he'll bring them back because white people, the largest target demographic, love it.

I hear ya about some orgers do think of Prince anything but being black even though Prince admitted himself he is a black man and that what he choose to be despite both of his parents was mixed.
But I don't agreed with the rest of your post.
Lisa was in the band way before Wendy and so it wasn't like Prince thinking 'Oh I am going to place two white looking girls in the band just to make millions'. Prince didn't even know Wendy can play guitar until two years later after he known her , and also when Dez wanted to leave, Wendy was at the right place at the right time to fill his spot. I think if Dez stayed in the band, the movie would still be a huge because of the soundtrack. I know many white people still don't know who Wendy and Lisa are to this day yet they wanted to see Prince because of PRince
But I don't get why only white folks love Wendy and Lisa but yet they scored a lot of black films. So it seem like that Master P, Babyface, Meshell (hell she wanted to date Wendy at one time but she was committed to Lisa), Tracy Edmonds, and Sanaa (the video director) also have some love for their work. I think that a good size of black people digged Wendy and Lisa whether they are well known or not. Also I don't considered Lisa to be a white woman since she is half Mexican.

Sigh... here we go again, the 'black' Prince thing...

I am really sure, Prince was trying to create different kinds of music during the mid-late eighties JUST because he is a musiclover, and NOT because they were white styles.

From the beginning of his career Prince has tried out 'black' and 'white' styles (sorry, i hate those tags, but i use them to make a point): on For You you can hear him sing jazzy / folky singer-songwriter tunes like Crazy You and So Blue, next to disco and soul tracks. Why you wanna treat me so bad is as AOR as 'white' AOR can be. On Dirty Mind he mixes 'white' new wave and guitar rock with 'black' funk. Etc.

When wendy and Lisa joined his band, and started to write songs with him it was just a way for him to expanding his musical horizon. It had nothing to do with him being more popular with the 'white' market. I mean: you must be crazy to try to reach that market with cabaretesque and vaudeville-like songs, like he did on Parade, LOL.

Apart from that i think people labelling him as a 'black' musician, is denying the facts: his father was halve phillipan and halve black, his mother was halve black and halve italian.
But, apart from that, also when you might see and call him as a black musician, a musician, whether he is black, white, yellow or green, is allowed to produce any kind of music he likes and wants too. I am glad people like Miles, Jimmy, Sly, Living Colour, Rage against the Machine and, yes, Prince, understand that. Yes, music is colourblind.

Prince said himself he is a black man so let the man choose what he wants to be. Just like Hallie Berry. She said she is a black woman despite she is biracial.

Unfortunately, it is Prince's RECENT bands that lack chemistry on or off stage. Ever since 1996, Prince has hired a revolving door of musicians who... really... I mean.... Who the fuck are they? I don't even know who is in the NPG right now. I mean I might know a handful of names, but those people are merely automatons to me.[/quote]

John Blackwell Drummer
Rhonda Smith Bass
Renato Neto Keyboard
Maceo Parker Sax
Cathie Jensen Sax Might be somebody new.

Anyone that thinks Prince didn't play the race card early in his career needs to put the crack pipe down.

I sure will be glad when family photos surface showing Prince's Phillipino and Italian relatives. All I've seen in his family photos are black folk.

Read some biographies about Prince for the racial background of his parents.

No one denied that his parents are both mixed with black and something else
But the fact remains is Prince said he is a black man and thats all it matters. That is what the man identify himself with so when will some of the other orgers finally get it? I don't get mad at Jennifer Beal, who is white and black, consider herself to be biracial and that is what she identified herself.

yes but thats mainly because of Purple Rain , if you take it out of the equation then 1980-86 was probably as successful as 1987 - 1992.
I don't think the Revolution broke up too soon by the way , from most reports
there were lots of arguments and tension , the girls mighta ended up strangling our Princey if theyd stayed much longer . Also as others have said ,
Wendy and Lisa were a huge positive influence on Prince's musical development , though that was as much due to the fact that they introduced him to the albums of great artists like The Beatles as it was through thier own musical talent .
He was quite happy to let them finish off his songs which is a huge plus point for any argument in their favour , but it can be argued that doesnt necessarily mean their musicianship influenced his own , just that he saw something in them that could add to the music he was making at the time .
