It's impossible to be a true vegan in our culture. Black and white abolitionists, like John Brown, fought and killed people who owned slaves or even supported American slavery. Although extreme, without their absolute zero tolerance of slavery, where would some of us be today? Are vegans going to kill their friends and family who eat meat to advance a cruelty free society? I don't think so.

Philosopy v. Life.

Some of us give ourselves a break and acknowledge that we are in the world and not of the world. We can philosophically 100% support vegetarianism/veganism and yet fail to meet the mark every time. And, hence can still call ourselves whatever.

It's like being a humanist and a pacifist yet we still choose to live in America and pay our tax dollars which help kill, torture, and terrorize others (and ourselves, ironically). We choose not to kill (... or just work day and night to impeach) our warmongering leaders because that in itself would be "diffcult" -- even though that might save many more hundreds of thousands of lives.

Live your life the best you can, and take the opportunity to help others in their journey also when the opportunity rises. And show people (and animals) some compassion).

You make some good points, though unfortunately they support an inaccurate point.

You're maintaining vegetarianism/veganism is impossible by comparing it to abolition and slavery. That's an inaccurate comparison to make, though I can see how some hardliners on both sides of the issue would attempt to make that analogy. Radical animal rights activists do compare their cause to that of abolitionists, and those who are radically opposed to their cause follow the "all or nothing" logic in their arguments.

But that's not what it has to be about.

For me - and for a lot of people I know and have known in the past - vegetarianism is a PERSONAL commitment and a very important INDIVIDUAL discipline. I don't avoid eating meat because I'm trying to get the world to become like me. I do it because I believe it's right - FOR ME - and if my actions influence someone else (which has happened more than once), all the better.

I only agree with you in that coersion is not a guaranteed method for success.

Has this been substantiated that he's actually eaten meat?

there were some "seen and heard" human interest items in various newspapers during the time of the musicology tour in which mentions were made of prince dining in different restaurants, and the reports mentioned he was eating fish and chicken dishes. i need to find these articles - i posted them myself on the mainpage back when i was a mod - because they weren't gossipy "aha!" stories about prince eating meat...i think the reporters had no idea he was veggie or carnie or whatever, and were just reporting details.

...but how do we know for sure that he was eating chicken? Every time I eat an eggplant parm, someone assumes it's chicken cutlet. Same thing with tofu dishes. Could be that what was "seen and heard" was less than accurate. shrug

my favorite line of hers (for god knows WHAT reason) is in 'multiple maniacs', when she says:

"Oh, Mr. David, I want to perform ACTS with you! Oh, God! God DAMN it!"

your point is flawed. it's like saying "you don't need to have a baby in your belly to be pregnant. as long as you like babies, there's nothing wrong with saying you're pregnant."

you either are or you aren't! lol

it's not a moral point i'm making, it's simple definition.

why do so many people wanna call themselves vegetarians when they wanna eat meat? believe me, the label doesn't get you a whole lot of prestige. lol

if prince can eat fish and be called a vegetarian, then i reserve the right to label myself a rock legend. why? because i believe in rock!

Ok, I'm bored and I had a sucky day, so I'll play "what's Princey eating these days?" biggrin

I'd say he favors a vegetarian diet, but occasionally eats a bit of fish. I have never heard tell of a single morsel of chicken passing his lips during his veggie days. He may have tried strict veganism for a time and it may not have suited him.

As far as accepting recognition for it or talking about it, I don't think he's done that for quite a while. What with all that's said about him in various places, I don't think setting the record straight is a priority for him. Even during the hip controversy all that was said is that he wasn't having surgery. These days he probably doesn't think about explaining what he's eating one way or the other.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Another good example of my point is being a Christian; it doesn't mean you don't sin, it just means you see christianity as the ideal.

But for someone who is only concerned about individual and personal choices, you seem to be getting your panties all twisted about what other people do.

Our president has a different idea about the rule of law than his own court appointees. Not everyone is in the same place in life.

I just ordered a veggie (w/o cheese) pizza for dinner tonight from an old Sicilian joint down the street. It's called variety. Italian and many other mediterranians have cuisine with a wide variety of purely veggie options. For instance, they use olive oil in many case instead of butter.

nod

I had a delicious Veggie Sicilian Pizza a few days ago and I swear by various mediterranian dishes. There are many options for us vegetarians and vegans.
