BPM counts for Prince records??

Hello all,

Longtime lurker, first time poster... I'm DJing the Lovesexy DC Prince party this weekend and although I typically play a lot of Prince in my sets, I've never done an entire night of Prince so I'm pretty excited!

I'm wondering if anyone has ever done BPM (beats per minute) counts for any albums? I hate to try to blend "Just As Long As We're Together" with "Hide The Bone" on the fly and they don't even come CLOSE to matching....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know "Erotic City" is 125 and "Gett off" is 101. Those are the only 2 I know off hand.

nah man. These were just the first two records that popped into my head that I know I"m gonna play... I play a lot of disco and consistently work "Just as long.." in my sets from time to time. but NEVER play Hide the Bone, but the organizers tell me it's a crowd favorite??

no, curt's just asking the BPMs of some stuff so he'll know which songs will pair well with each other.

´that should be an instinctive thing for someone that knows the music to do...dont you know what it would sound like if you played erotic city and mixed in the intro to kiss (the guitar lick) and then the rest of the song ??? sounds like A B C stuff to me... confused

THANK YOU!!

It's like this, you may know every single riff of Lady Cab Driver, but it's not until you try playing together with Nasty Girl do you realize that these two songs not only have the same BPM, but also are in the same key which makes them blend seamlessly on the dancefloor.

Prince's catalog is just WAY too vast to have experimented with all of the possible combinations of songs that could blend into one another. So in order to come up with some blends that I may not have thought could work, a good place to start is to look at the BPM's and maybe come up with a few interesting tracks that you wouldn't normally hear back to back.

Prettymanson, yes, songs that get a lot of play like Erotic City and Kiss are totally instinctive about how to blend them together, but I'm not planning on playing 4 hours of the hits... the "fans" would kill me wink

I thought this was a good idea for a thread. I'd be interested in BPM's of Prince songs too but I guess nobody knows them.

He didn't say he wanted to mix those two songs together. I think he was saying he needed help so that something like that wouldn't happen.

Jeez we're really giving a first time poster a nice welcome eh? Did ya read his post? He DOES dj but has never done a full on Prince set. He's just asking for a few tips. I have done a Prince set before and it not that easy. Esp if you want to beatmatch the songs.

Give the guy a break. It's not like this is the first time someone has asked this question. AND the Lovesexy Party is a big deal. He just wants folks to enjoy them selves on the dance floor.

or

get some mastering software or a Tap program to measure the tempo of each song
And if the tempo doesn't match but its in the same key... you can always slow down the song to the fit tempo.... than speed it up after the merge...

Depending on BPMs is like a cashier not being able to give out correct change when the electricity goes off.

Knowing what sounds good together really is something that takes having an ear for. Sometimes BPMs help but I have found a lot of times, that even two records that claim to have the same BPM require speeding up or slowing down.

Only if they're not too far apart because you don't want one song sounding like Alvin and the Chipmunks when you fade it in. lol Also, once the blend has been made, it's best to gradually slow down or speed up little by little during the song so it's not noticeable.

Thank you!!!

I don't rely on the bpm either, though it helps. I prefer to mix songs that sound similar...Like S&M Groove and Northside & ICP&C...

That's a kind of hard one to mix. I have found that songs more on the rock side are harder to mix. I can find something to bring in after it but I never can get the beginning of "Uptown" to come in right.

Prince Sexy Dancer 121
Prince Lady Cab Driver 122
Prince Lets Work 122

I've done these three together many times. Now that I see the BPM, I see why they work so well. "Head" is another that goes well.

Prince Irresisible Bitch 126
Prince When Doves Cry 126

I've done these two also. "Erotic City" goes really well with either one of these.

Prince Dirty Mind 131

This one does really well between the 12 Inch of "Little Red Corvette" and "Controversy". During the drums and handclaps at the end of the extended version of "Little Red Corvette", fade in the opening drum machine of "Dirty Mind". When "Dirty Mind" breaks down to the drum machine in the middle, bring in the opening drums to "Controversy". It's ass shakin' time then! lol

Prince Lets Go Crazy 196

Very hard one to mix unless you have the 12 Inch. During the extended part, "Delirious" or "Sexuality" works OK. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's just according if you've had enough to drink that night. Those skills work really well when you've got a good buzz going on. lol
