It's funny you guys are talking about "Rave Un2". I HATED that CD so much when it came out. I was so disappointed, since I was hoping for a return to the glory days (mid 80's). I remember popping it in my CD player for the first time, all excited to her the song "Rave" (loved the version on Small Club), and then I heard it...I couldn't believe my ears. Just thought it was complete crap. The whole thing just sucked...why the hell did he remake "Everyday is a Winding Road"...man I just wanted to vomit after hearing that one. I listened to it twice before selling it on Half.com.

HOWEVER, about two weeks ago I was going through my blank tapes and found a copy of "Rave" (why I taped it was beyond me). I popped it in and, to my suprise, actually thought it wasn't that bad. I have been listening to it since then and am particularly impressed with TGRES, So Far So Pleased, Man 'o' War, Baby Knows, Strange But True, & Pretty Man. Everyday is a Winding Road is still a giant turd of a song, and "Rave" the song is still a disappointment, but now, at least, I can listen to it without wanting to break the stereo.

As for Graffiti Bridge...never hated that one...there is some really good stuff on there. Elephants & Flowers is one of my favorite songs...period. He shouldn't have touched "We Can Funk" though...the '86 version is SO much better.

I think Come, Chaos, NPS (this one grew on me...sounds great with headphones), & The Vault are the most misundrstood albums. I listen to all of those on a pretty regular basis, don't know why they get slammed so bad.

Methinks that every album that he releases confuses and gets misunderstood by hardcore purple headz like us, casual listeners , the media etc. A UK mag a few years ago referred to him as "a confusing little bastard" in a complimentary way and i guess its true. TRC still confuses me on some levels but that doesn't stop me enjoying the hell out of it.

I think very few people understand that the Purple Rain album is as much a spiritual showdown as are Lovesexy and TRC.

PR was very spiritual..or had a lot of spiritual connotations. He even went as far as claiming covertly that he was Jesus in I Would Die 4 U imho--he'd die for u like Jesus dies for the worlds sins etc..he isnt human he's a dove etc...Lest Go Crazy with all excited because theyre gonna die and go to heaven etc...Computer Blue looking for the "righteous one"...backwards masking of the second coming...not exactly strict dogma but christian like elements to many of th e songs and nobody seemed to complain or feel offended. Im surprised nobody was actually offended by his stance and what could be seen as blashpemy...instead they singled out Darling Nikki.

I think thats a main reason most initially hated it or were disappointed in it..it was hyped up by Clive and Prince as a return to "Prince" musicianship and everyone expected the Prince aesthetic and what they got was a fair pop album instead (along with some dubious production standards in the grand scheme of Prince music).

I remember popping it in my CD player for the first time, all excited to her the song "Rave" (loved the version on Small Club), and then I heard it...I couldn't believe my ears. Just thought it was complete crap.

I thought the exact same thing and still dont like that one.

The whole thing just sucked

Initially I thought it was crap too but it took a few more listens etc.

I dont get why everyone hates this one so much with such passion...I can see not liking the Lary part but I dont think the rest is that bad
