Empire Movie Magazine - UTCM was a vanity project UK movie magazine EMPIRE had an article in this month's issue about the worst movie vanity projects ever made.
Apart from "Honest" (All Saints) and "Battlefield Earth" (John Travolta), the third worst of all time was "Under The Cherry Moon" for Prince. They even criticise the soundtrack i.e. Parade (how dare they!??!) Here's what they said: "Two friends go to the south of France to become gigolos in the 20s/30s/40s/whenever and persuade rich women to part with their cash. Sins: Prince's acting. A script where the only camera direction appears to consist of the words: "AND THEN A BIG CLOSE-UP OF ME." Prince directing. Hopes of Salvation: Very slight. The soundtrack's not bad. From a distance."

Has he done a film that WASN'T a 'vanity project'? Graffiti Bridge was a documentary on the everyday street-life in downtown downtrodden Minneaopolis... errr, wasn't it?

Yeah, but you do ride into your own club on a motorbike and have dance-offs over ownership... right?...

They say Prince originaly wanted Morris Day to play the leed roll.
But W.B rejected to make the movie unless Prince was the star in it.

I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

That's not obvious at all! It is obvious to anyone that knows music. If it was set in the 20's or 30's, then how could Mary Sharon be singing "Planet Rock" - a song that came out over 50 years later?? |

So that means that Moulin Rouge is not set in the 1900's because they keep
singing songs that were only written in the last 30 years? [Edited 6/30/06 15:12pm]

under the cherry moon is not a good film but the "vanity project" bullshit that appears in every review is just that, bullshit. and very unfair. purple rain is far more of a vanity project, if anything. and anyone who knows anything about prince knows that the cherry moon era was probably his least narcissistic and most collaborative period ever; if he had put a fake name under "director" these complaints about it being a vanity project would be non existent

I must admit, I watched UTCM again when it came out on DVD last year, and I had to stop it well before the end. Its sadly so very crap, Its one redeeming bit is Girls & Boys, but other than that, relying on Wreka Stow as its one gag wears a bit thin. http://www.goldiesparade.co.uk/ - Prince discography, tour history, news and more.

UTCM is the best Prince movie - but for all the wrong/right reasons.
I guess it's down to your tastes, but if you like watching good-bad movies, you'll get it, otherwise you'll hate it.
