Especially to someone who only knows Kiss, 1999 & Raspberry Beret...In a Large Room with No light.

My boyfriend is a huge fan of jazz and blues. I converted him with "When the Lights go down". It was the very first Prince song I ever played for him. I didn't tell him it was Prince, I just said that I wanted him to hear a song.

Halfway through, he asked "WHO is this?" I told him it was Prince! Another successful conversion smile

You know, that is honestly the 1st song that came 2 me in answer 2 this ?

BLACKMF

When Doves Cry is still amazing. It was a mainstream hit - which some knucklehead stated as the reason that it is a great example - but it was not a mainstream peice of music. The incredible space left by the absence of a bass line; the rock guitar riff opening; the neo-classical keyboard breaks; and the choral vocals layered with several tracks of Prince's voice. All of his peers - if that what you have to call them - were simply stunned that he would release something like that and it could still rock and be on the radio and in the clubs. They all knew that they didint have the courage or the skills to pull off something like that.

I agree with your choice of the "Ballad of Dorothy Parker. There is simply nothing else out there that sounds quite like that particular song and it transcends time in terms of sounding dated(meaning that you could play that joint 20 years down the line and it would be killing everything else out at that moment). Say if he never included that particular song on "Sign of the Times" and he were to drop that on us now in the mist of the D'angelo/Maxwell/Raphael Saddiq wave that currently exist in soul music these days(much respect to those cats 'cause they are carrying the torch and keeping that vibe alive!). He would getting all kinds of love from critics and those only familair with the popular tunes he's put out around the time of his heyday. Especially after folks have written him off in favor of aforementioned he inspired. And to tell the truth, he still has it like that! I'd like him to stop holding out on us and give a lot of his classic bootleg joints a proper release(purple music, wonderful ass, baby your a trip, possessed, etc.,) so that the many heads that are only familiar with what's technically available can take a closer look at this man's core genuis!

You can name at least one from each album he made, but to me, Sign 'o' The Times is the one best exemplifies Prince genius. Before that, everybody knew he was a great musician, the looks, innovator, everything. But when that incredible album came up, even the so called critics loved it. Even though Lovesexy it's my favorite.

You are right! Usually the people I hang around are thoroughly convinced by that, Hide the Bone, or Calhoun Square or anything on Rave Un2 The year 2000.

I was convinced of his genius in the Parade era.

"Kiss" was the first to get me really interested, because it showed how he combined simplicity, humor and great quality.

The rest of the album added a lot of diversity to that and when I heard "Do U Lie?" after al the other songs on Parade, I knew that only someone very special (like Mozart in the movie, I thought then) could have made this record.

But today I'd choose "Lady Cab Driver" to point out why he's a genius. Not only because I love it.

In "Lady Cab Driver", Prince plays a simple but continuously interesting snaredrum over a never changing drum computer pattern. That is the most basic representation of his unique phrasing quality, that you'll hear in every song named in this thread.

Too many, especially when it comes to the lyrics.

I'd play 'When doves cry' (if they hadn't heard it), and 'Annastesia'. I think these songs will hit them the first time they listen to it.

And the list will go on and on...

I'd say Power Fantasic

because to make a song like that.. and "sit on it" for years and years.. not really caring, and then releasing it on a B Side.

shows allot

* any other artist IF they made a song like that, they would release it as fast as they could.

The song is amazing
