I think that its one of his great gems that isn't really noticed much but is just splendid. That main keyboard sound of the song has just such a GREAT 80s sense of place and time to it and of course that nice little guitar solo near the end just makes this song a must hear then repeat kind of thing. I don't think believe he has ever played the song live though. Am I correct.

You know I had forgotten about that song. I played it the other day because I was in a Controversy mood and it totally put in such a great mood. It does remind me of the great 80's with its killer melodies.

best song on 'Controversy' shoulda been a single!!

Here's why Private Joy is special to me:

Back in HS (late 80's), my best friend and I used to smoke a lot of weed, sometimes even before school (hey--I still got good grades and was on the Honor Roll). We had our first hour class together (Art), and we would smoke a joint on the way to school, jamming to Prince music in the car. I remember this one time in particular, obsessing over Private Joy. My friend can sing so sweetly, so I made her sing Private Joy to me when we got into class. I was quite stoned, so I sat like inches from her face with my eyes closed. It was sublime, but I'm sure we looked like two huge weirdos to everyone else!

Oh and while we're on the topic I have question that's been driving me crazy...
which song(s) (other than Orgasm) use the ending solo from PJ?..I know there's at least one more but I can't remember which song I heard it on.

Heck yeah!! This one of my all time favorite Prince jams; When Doves Cry, Let's Work, Private Joy, and Uptown. I love all of the songs, but those are my favorites. Great post.
