I'm surprised to see so many people mentioning the Symbol album. I always found it bloated and annoying. I mean, really, it's got Tony all over it. Yuck.

I think that Prince integrates the rap elements on this album in an excellent way. "Love 2 the 9s" is a good example - the hip hop middle section, then getting back to the sugary soul that makes the song. Perfect!

Tony doesn't equal "annoying" for me. I think people on here tend to be obsessed with him. He's not that bad.

prince is a brilliant record imo - so many styles, and excellent songwriting. I think it's one of the best Prince albums ever. It made me a hardcore fan.

Agreed.'Love Symbol' is one of the most inspired albums that Prince has ever made. The music throughout is vibrant and invigorating.I even like what Tony M. brings to the party.I like his contributions to songs like "Sexy MF" and "The Max".This is the most creative, most exciting album that Prince made in the 90s.The subsequent albums ('Come','Chaos and Disorder',etc) were spotty,imo....some good songs, some crap songs.

Come is my favorite, followed by TGE, then prince. I just listened to prince yesterday and had forgotten how many songs I liked. TGE & prince would be better if they didn't have all the operator/segue/Vanessa Bartholomew stuff.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

1. Symbol, with a few edits, because there are some strong lasting songs.

2. Diamonds and Pearls because I loved the blatant commericialism behind it.

3. Emancipation, give or take 12-16 songs.
All good things they say never last...

Symbol? Yeah, it's prolly that one. My Name is Prince is too funny.

And his red and blue outfit was cool.

I believe The Symbol album has his strongest material of the 90's. The songs are really great and as you said "inspired". Tony M works on most of the songs except with My Name Is Prince which isn't his fault. However, my favorite albums are:

1) Chaos and Disorder
2) The Gold Experience
3) The Truth
4) Emancipation
5) Symbol
6) Graffiti Bridge
7) Diamonds & Pearls
8) Rave
9) Come

Oh don't get me wrong, prince has some brilliant songs on it. Damn U and 7 are total classics. But as an album? It's flawed. Very, very flawed.

The storyline is simply ridiculous. Prince with a young girl, the scandal, etc. etc.

Some of the lyrics are also either just painfully bad or flat out creepy.

"Why is age more than a number when it comes to love?" It's like a child molestor's anthem.

Or "Don't look now, but there's a river of blood. You must have been a virgin; what am I guilty of?" Just plain gross.

Then there's that silly shit about giving back the chains or whatever. Just nonsense.

Strong songs, yes, but as an album it's a mess. Even Prince doesn't like it.

And that's probably the point of disagreement. I don't buy a pop album for the storyline, but for good songs, even if it's something like a concept album. If I want good music with a strong story, I listen to Wagner.

And looking at "Graffiti Bridge" (the movie), I just expect the storyline in a Prince concept album to be confuse and obscure. biggrin

Btw, I think the segues are funny (even if they don't make sense) and I love that "river of blood" line, although it's indeed not Shakespeare. boxed

Did Prince really say he doesn't like this album? Wow! Then again,he's not too fond of 'Parade' either lol he seems to dislike several of his top-rated albums

I agree with you, there are a few flaws with this album. The soap opera storyline makes Prince look like a dirty old man at times (lol) but I still consider this to be his best work in the 90s.I can honestly say that I like every song on this album, although the last track ("Sacrfice Of Victor") is too chaotic-sounding,imo.The album should have closed with "Three Chains O Gold",a perfect finale.

I agree.I really don't have a problem with the storyline. It's silly, yes (we all know that Prince can be an erratic storyteller,'Graffiti Bridge' proved that, lol),but it doesn't detract from the songs at all.The songs stand on their own.I think Prince makes his most inspired music when he's writing for a movie,or in this case,a rock soap opera. The music is loud and vibrant....there's a real urgency here that you don't hear on an album like 'Come'.That's why I said that this is one of his most "inspired" albums. The songs all have a purpose. It's not just a collection of tunes thrown together.

I like the symbol album and The Gold Experience. Its hard to pick a favorite because Prince puts out too much music at one time and mixes his best work along with some mediocre songs.

The Undertaker was the best album of the 90s IMO.

OK promo only, so it doesn't count, but other than that - I'd go with Gold and Exodus.

prince and C&D following up the rear.

Also - TBA doesn't count! mad lol
