Simple production vs. heavy>prince,etc.

yesterday, while wathcing a movie from the 1950s, my mother talked about the music in it and how much music has changed throughout the years. the music from her time was "simple" yet meaningful. the singer sang and a few insturments were used. not only was the music straightforward simplicty at its best, the lyrics were very deep, thoughtful and meaningful.

in the usa, music keeps changing. i think we moved to mid-tempos with hip-hop beats right now. there is some music with so much productions which over-shadows the voice of the singer and the lyrics really could improve.

whether it is with a prince song, do u perfer his complex music or his simple, not too layered music? can u please list the names of the songs and please explain why/why not u enjoy the song? do u think the lyrics are meaningful?

how about other artists? in my opinion of heavy prodcution is song like Ghosts. do u think simple, not too layered music( w/ vocals) makes the best music and meaningful music or is it the complex, difficult music that just astounds you? please list songs and explain why or why not the song meant anything to u musically and spirtiually.

Lovesexy is rather complex musically and spiritually, and that's probably one of the reasons why I like it so much -- it's as if he tapped into something supernatural to produce that album.

In regards to your other question: A lot of trance, techno, electronic dance music sounds complex with the layering of many different samples, effects, and instruments, but would you really call it complex? How complex is it to make a song out of pre-made bits and pieces, using a computer to arrange it and add effects? I've worked with some of those computer programs and made some pretty cool songs myself, but someone who's never written a song in their life could almost do the same with the technology that's available now.

To me, true artistic creativity includes a large portion of originality and ingenuity, no matter whether the end result is complex or simple.

A number of things enter into the production picture. not all are good. I like a tight horn arrangement that bounces along with the rhythm; filling in the spaces where the lead is silent. I'm not too crazy about string arrangements nor multi-layering the higher voices (alto, soprano, falsetto) on top of the lead as it presents a more "manufactured" sound. Tends to give me a feeling of dreariness.

Since I'm out a lot listening to live muisc I like a live concert sound. Direct-to-disc transfers with no overdubs uniform mike placement sound liek the performance is right in your face.

It's all about a matter of preferences.
