When Doves Cry in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet

I've just been watching Baz Lurhmann's Romeo + Juliet for the upteenth time, in preparation for a conference on Shakespeare...

I've been reviewing various versions with the view to a comparison study of aesthetics, and am once again struck by the amazing beauty and appropriateness of the choir version of "When Doves Cry," set against images of civil strife between the Montague and Capulet families, and this line echoes through the head of Friar Laurence:

"For this alliance may so happy prove
To turn your households' rancour to pure love." (2..2.91-2)

Anyone else especially fond of that moment?

For me, it was definitely a pivotal moment in the director's interpretation of the film...

kind of the way the theme song of Zeffirelli's (performed by the balladeer at the Capulet ball) did... (Luhrmann's version of this is Mercutio doing his drag lip-synch at the Capulet ball, heh heh)

I got both of them long before I became interested in Prince, and it was one of the songs that turned me onto him. Was quite surprised to read that he wrote it! And part 2 of the soundtrack is far and away the better one, its just amazing!!
