why are you hating ?uestlove...he is a tremendouse drummer. There aint nothing average about him. Gedt tired of you people hating against someone like him. He clearly is a Prince head. A fan like all of us here...and his comments here were not a critisism...they were more of an observation and a funny one at that.

Some of you really need to lighten up. ?uestlove average???!! That is absurd...pure hateration!...and why? Hes one of us

Nobody's hating anybody so sit yo azz down. rolleyes I'm not defending Prince, either, and I don't give a cat's coochie who ?uestlove is a fan of. IMHO ?eustlove is an average drummer, at best. YOUR opinion may be different. Do you know what "they" say about opinions? lol

yeah you can have an opinion but it still can be a weak one. I don't know of a muscian in the business who thinks ?uestlove is average. One either you know nothing about music or drummers for that matter or two your a hater. Saying ?uestlove is an average drummer is the equivalent of some Clay Aiken fan saying Prince is an average guitar player. Its smacks of hating and catty bitchiness aside from being a pretty shitty opinion...that goes for you and Graycap

Indeed....While everyone has a right to their own opinion, when you make statements like such and such is "average" you have to expound on your comment...Give a reason as to why you think ?uestlove is an average drummer; Most of the folks that comment negatively about ?uestlove most of the time have an axe to grind with hip-hop...Trust me, if folks gave a valid reason to such comments, I could at least respect their opinion.

The interesting part is most folks have never seen the man play drums live before...And if they have its only been with the Roots, not exactly a platform to display exspansive drumming since the music tends to be pretty straight forward and boom-bap driven...You should check out the man's outside work with other artists and you will begin to understand why he's become a go-to session drummer...I could give a damn if he's a Prince fan...The man is a good drummer.....Plain and simple

Pot calling the kettle, dontcha think. lol But I'll indulge you a little bit, since it seems you have a hardon for big black men with afros. First I started playing drums and percussion (with professional training) at the age of 12, buddy, about 20 years ago. So stfu. I don't play anymore. In fact I sit down at a kit about once a year just to stay loose. I gave it up to study guitar and piano (which I played in a jazz and concert ensemble), then came bass. That's been over 10 years now. Are you able to see the trend here, Sherlock?
Finally, I can name about 500 drummers, professional or otherwise, that, again, In MY opinion, can smoke ?uestlove, which in my mind places him in the average category. No, I'm not hating on dude...but it sure seems you're willing to hate on anybody that doesn't agree with you.

These comments are so stooped in ignorance that I'm at a lost 4 words.

Let me be CLEAR: for a professional drummer, Questlove is A V E R A G E. There is NOTHING great about it. That lil silly ass "hater" comment does NOT apply. I dig Quest and I dig the Roots. To say that he is GREAT means you don't know SHIT about drumming.

Since I am a musician and have been for over 20 years I'll LET that that silly ass comment go about not knowing anything about music.

I'm done.

As someone who has seen him drum more than a shitload of times all I can say is that he's an average drummer... Terry Bozzio he ain't...

How in the hell could such an "average" drummer have jammed (in studio/on stage) with everyone from Prince, to John Mayer, to Jason Mraz, to Fiona Apple, MeShell Ndegeocello, to Erykah Badu, to Herbie Hancock, to Al Green, to Earth Wind & Fire, to Cassandra Wilson.... aww fuck it.

Murph I know I don't have to explain this to you but for others. My comments about ? being one of us have more to do with being hospitable when people talk about him and not being so "bitchy" I mean some here in this thread read his comments as if he was criticising Prince. Thats hilarious because he was doing nothing of the sort.

He is after all one of us...hes family...why be nasty when referring to him as a lot of these rock heavy fans are. Hes has posted on this board a number of times as I'm sure you know.

It would just seem to me that we might be a bit kinder to one of our own especially since Prince gets it from all sides outside of his niche of fans.

I agree with you about ? and people forming an opinion about him based on their negative feeling for hip hop but sometimes I'm amazed at the lack of depth and thought that people give to an opinion. ? is much more than the roots and even if people are just referring to his work with them there still is an undercurrent of hateration as if somehow you are slighting other drummers by saying ? is good. Hell its clear he is good...and even clearer that he is far from average.

Funny that he mentions Bowie, because he really fucks up some lyrics quite often! I have this great recording of an Heathen-era gig, when he performs "The Bewlay Bros." for the first time again. He does this little speech and he's turning page over page of his lyric book, saying "there's more words in this than in Tolstoji's "War and Peace" - now I wish all of us the best". He gets through it without mistakes, but I thought it was quite funny.

Quest wasn't dissing Prince he was stating the truth. I remember when Questlove was interviewing D'Angelo and he asked D did he remember when Prince forgot the words to the bridge of Ballad of Dorothy Parker and Questlove was like "but we had his back though" Questlove has the utmost respect for Prince he has so much respect and love for him, he can tell the truth!

taken from this show
http://therootslive.com/a...71703.html

also go listen to the first song of the second disc of the gilles peterson bbc session compliation double cd.

he may come off as an average drummer at first, but that mostly because hes a drummer more focused on creating the right tone or groove instead of complex rthyms (eff speeling)
but
he can play complex ish

Pathetic fams; if someone's not licking Prince's balls with their comments, they take it as someone spitting in the face of Jesus.

Whatever... somebody with a resume that extensive is impressive and can't be classified as just average. That mofo is doing something right to have worked with so many. Madonna? that's a terrible example.... she's only worked with 4 talented people as far as I'm concerned.

It's years later and I'm still blown away by the ending codas of "You Got Me" and "Break You Off"...

To many, his technique may not look or sound that impressive but his range and ability to assimilate himself outside of a strictly a hip-hop context is. I've never heard of any other drummer of his celebrity who has been able to do the same within their own genres. In that context, he's definitely more than an AVERAGE drummer...

Your knowledge of how the INDUSTRY works is very LIMITED. Let me give you an example in pro sports. How many coaches in the NBA have Championship rings? About 5 or 6. Yet there are a circle of 30 or so coaches that keep getting fired and rehired to lose on another team. Does this mean that they are TALENTED? Or does it mean they are a PART of the fraternity of coaches? Let's get back 2 Quest. To say that he is an average drummer is NOT an insult. There are very few professional drummers doing what Quest does, but that alone does NOT make him a great drummer.

It's your perspective that is a bit off.....

It's not that deep. It's just the condescending comments that irk me... like that "Your knowledge is LIMITED" comment.. When you act like you're going to shed some light don't give me a story about basketball championships. lol That just seems like you really don't know what you're talking about and you're just spitting out an analogy in an attempt to sound "knowledgeable"

Gravy and then some. Hollywood is like EVERY other business. Once u are in, U are in. It's fairly simple. My NBA story points out how CLEARLY that point is. Let's be honest. How many session druumers do what Quest does? (That has a rep for it?)
