The guitar riff sounds a lot like American Woman, especially the Rave DVD version, but I think it is an original song.
Besides Prince's guitar playing, the bass fill by Josh is very well done.

I posted a topic on NPG about whether or not this song was a Prince original. No confirmation/denial from the PPs, but a user named schming found this in the ascap archives:

The music is a rip-off like metal said.
I gather it IS about Mani.

I'm probably the only one that thinks the song means "I'm being pretentious by labeling myself as a misfit before anyone even knows me." Its a cover of Rudolf and Herbie's song off the soundtrack for Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. The original lyrics were " Why am I such a misfit. I am not such a nit wit just because my nose glows, seems I don't fit in." It was written by Burl Ives. By the way be on the lookout for the remix entitled "Baaa Baaa I'm a black sheep."

There seems to be a lot of speculation about who the lyrics are about when no one is even sure of what the exact lyrics are...
If someone has them please share. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

This is what I could come up with. Maybe someone can fill in the question marks.

Well he is generous in that he'll want her to get royalties also, and his name stamped nexted to hers will give her credibility she'll need just to get noticed outside this circle

How do you know that? The album isn't out yet, have you seen the credits? Often Prince credits people on the accompanying booklet, but then the registered song on ASCAP is solely Prince, so he's the only one getting actual royalties from them.

As a previous poster mentioned, the ASCAP registrations are closer to the truth of who writes what on a Prince associated album because they define who gets royalties. For instance "Nasty Girl" is credited to "Vanity" on the Vanity 6 album credits, but I believe the ASCAP registration is for Prince. The ASCAP registrations you posted would seem to indicate that Tamar is indeed a legitimate songwriter, which isn't all the surprising given the fact that she's not some b-movie actress or model Prince brought into the studio just because they were dating. Like her or not, she's been schooled both formally and informally in the performing arts for most of her life, so her picking up a thing or two about songwriting isn't outside the realm of probability. Also note that unlike the "front" publishing companies like Tionna and Girlsongs that were also owned by Prince, the Tamar songs are co-administered by a completely different agency.

btw, what do you mean by "front publishing companies like Tionna and Girlsongs?" It was part of the "image" presented to the media of the time along with Prince's proteges supposedly writing and co-producing their own material that they also had their own music publishing. I remember various media sources saying things like "The Time has their own publishing company" or "Vanity 6 write and publish their own songs". It didn't take long though, before it was widely known that Tionna and Girlsongs were actually both an alias for Controversy Music. [Edited 7/3/06 2:30am]
