I Wish There Was "Freedom of Speech" here: Hello:
There are some questions that I'd like to ask about the last 2 tv appearances of prince on american idol and good morning america. I'm afraid that if I ask them, I might be banned from this site. Oh, well here goes: [Do not ask where can I get or send me a copy snip - When in doubt orgnote a mod if you are unsure - You can go to www.housequake.com to legally view the AI performance and the GMA performance - luv4u] Thanks

It's not illegal to record public domain material such as anything that gets broadcasted on TV, it's freely distributable without monetary gain. It's the mods' decision however.

not true...there is still copyright ownership on television broadcasts (including morning shows)...and since since prince's lawyers have issued warning to the org we dont do it. and housequake doesnt legally/illegally show it...they just do it. via an agreement with npgmc? or not? who knows...who cares...ben's rules say we dont do it so we dont do it. public domain are public access shows without copywrite or personally uploaded files (ie, your own private video uploaded to youtube) or old tv shows and movies whom the copywrite owner's have allowed their copywrite to expire... [Edited 6/18/06 8:03am] - Sad but true. Maybe it´s illegal, but it makes no sense to fans of someone who said ´free the music´. I mean, I live in Brasil. These american TV shows aren´t broadcasted here. I am glad I have friends that sent the videos to me. They arent making any profit of it, and neither do I. But, rules are rules...

[Edited 6/18/06 8:03am] Okay, should have made it more clear. By most common European copyright laws, it is perfectly legal to TAPE TV-shows for your own collection (that's why the taxes are paid for c-cassettes and VHS tapes - and what the fuck for would they sell blank tapes at the stores if they are not meant to be used). These tapes are your personal property and they can even be sold to other people (for you are just essentially selling a recordable tape, regardless of the content) through "informal" means (trading that doesn't generate taxable income), yet you are not allowed to make second generation copies of them and sell them forward. In other words when it becomes business, it's illegal. However, prince.org rules are prince.org rules and we all should abide them. Yet we should take NPGMC's interpretations of even the US copyright laws with a pinch of salt, as they're certainly sometimes more than a bit shady and not think of them as a model example of how copyright laws are generally handles. But unfortunately, if you mess with the authorities in any way they can always hold you responsible for something else (cut down to basics, all fansites are "illegal" to certain extent).
