Pearls before the Swine.....and the "fan" I was listening 2 the song, “Pearls before the Swine” the other day and it so reminds me of a lot of so called Prince “fans”. I don’t have the lyrics in front of me but I challenge u guys 2 read them and tell me if u agree.
Based on a high percentage of the post that I read here and other places, the song fits rather nicely with some people. Take a read and tell me what u think. [Edited 6/20/06 8:36am] [Edited 6/20/06 8:36am]

Reminds me of the Paisley Park days when even though people came and had access they were not happy. BUT knowing P and how abstract he can be, would he be that forthcoming in a song? who knows. I always thought it was about a specific time frame, where he was trying to assess the value of allowing people to be close to him and questioning whether or not it was worth it in the long run.
here are the lyrics: If I leave my front door open would u come and visit me? Just 2 slander my name hopin' that I would pack my bags and leave... If I did would u remember 2 feed the dove and clean the cage? And never count in front of the children lest they die of old age I don't really know y we have 2 go r separate ways Whether or not we grow after the seeds r shown Only time can say... Can I offer u baklava? or a bagel with cream cheese? Will we say grace 2 r father holding hands down on r knees? R we better off just fighting? U on ur side, me on mine R the words that I keep writing... only pearls b4 the swine? What makes men claim that u're a friend when u're not at all? They knock u down and then, they lift u up again, just 2 c u fall... But like a bird I'll keep on singing... a song that never leaves ur mind If nothing else u've taught me one thing... "Never cast ur pearls b4 the swine" We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Why, Anx? I thought the general consensus was that it was directed at fans who came to the Celebrations. Particularly those who were pissed at the way he conducted them (the "preaching" for example) and subsequently dragged his name through the mud. The Normal Whores Club

I never heard that story nor did I realize it was the "general consensus'. Interesting.....

It does read that way as well.....but it can be applied to a group. it could be inspired by peeking on a fan site like this or HQ and reading some of the more vitriolic posts by self-proclaimed "ex-fans". of course, what prince didn't include in the song is how "ex-fans" come running back like little bitches when he has something new to sell us. prince is hardly the victim of his fans. his prolific nature just spoiled us rotten over the years, is all.

what's the HOT list? We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou

if indeed there WAS a hot list with two names on it, i can probably guess what those names were.

That's just a term I use. Security professionals much like police look out for "certain" types of people and or individuals.

this song was his first new public release after 09/11/01... I had been waiting to see what Prince would do.
that audio show distinctly seemed to be a response or comment in it's tone. didn't it start with a bell ringing or something? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

To me, it sounds a lot more like he's having a go at some journalist or something. 'slander' sounds more like saying something about Prince in print - and They knock u down and then, they lift u up again, just 2 c u fall sounds a lot like what newspapers do. There certainly have been times when Prince has invited journalists over to Paisley Park to either talk with him or hear some new stuff, perhaps he took offence at what some of them wrote?

Oh yeah totally! It reminds me of fans too. The ones who hate on him. His music is his treasure and he's sharing it, his most precious gift, only to be knocked down by the swine.
It's Matthew 7:6 and the verse is somewhat of a debate in itself.....if people can't agree on that, how are they gonna agree on a Prince song. But I think your right Gray.

I think it's about the fans yeah, but a specific fan.

It doesnt sound like its about a specific group of people. Likely hes going on about a combination of groups of people. Like fans as well as journalists. Both have been to his house. Both have behaved in an unseemly fashion whilst being there as guests. So he can't help but have a gentle dig at them for misbehavin/takin advantage of his hospitality. This is a gentle song, gentle, butlike a fist in a velvet glove

Although there was a specific complaint about the fan who nicked his cutlery and scribbled graffiti in the loo with their poo
