your old school recommendations - pleez!

good morning, orgsters. i am currently in search of some old school tunes... 70s-80s funkster stuff. heard a lot of good music growing up in the 70s (my brothers' beatles, elvis, country rock, latin etc) but regrettfully know little in the soul/funk/r&b category. i mean, i know the tunes but not necessarily the artists or titles.

can y'all help me out? i'm downloading some run dmc as i type... would really appreciate your recommendations.

peace & JAH bless...

Hmmm, concentrating on 1970s stuff that probably influenced Prince I would go for Sly and The Family Stone, The Ohio Players, Funkadelic, Parliament, The Stylistics, The Delfonics, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder.
Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

yes yes i know these names. thanks for the reminder. i might recognize some titles when i see them.

how about some of the more obscure stuff - precursors to rap, etc? the stuff that's being sampled today by current r&b artists...

No one mentioned the late, great Curtis Mayfield. You can't go wrong with a bit of Curtis. R.I.P.

I know you said funkster stuff but some mid-late 70's Bowie records would show some influential material as well (especially the Young Americans album)...

hey sweety, u know u know a funk expert personally. the orgers are all right about sly and the family stone. there are 2 albums that are PIT7s requirements. "Fresh" and "Theres a Riot Goin On." both by Sly and ther family stone. Also Graham Central Station. get everything they have. Funkadelic is very important. also Parliment. James Brown has some less known stuff in the 70s that prince was definately into, but check out some early new wave. people forget that prince was into Blonde and Buzzcocks and stuff. even Sex Pistols. early rap stuff, check out some Melly Mel, and also the Furious Five. early Run DMC, also the Fat Boys. (only the first album). On the other end, "Headhunters" by Herbie Hancock. very important. Miles Davis "On the Corner." and the Crusaders, anything from the 70s by them. ill think of some more later.

i agree totally. some James Brown songs... "Get up off of that thang." "For goodness sakes, just look at those cakes." "The Big Payback".
but seriously, the WHOLE "Fresh", and "Theres a Riot Goin On" albums by Sly.
Jimi Hendrix, and his Band of Gypsies. gota get that.
