Oh how I miss the Mayte(s ass) era. (Insert something clever here)

In my mind, two people are responsible for watering down Prince and taking the fire out of his music: Mayte and Larry Graham. Mayte brought him "love", and Graham brought him "God". Those two things are death to an artist. (Just look at Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins as another example.) Part of Prince's appeal was the mix of the sacred and the profane. It energized him and his music.
But also, the Purple One himself is responsible for neutering his relationship with his true muses, Wendy and Lisa. All the GREAT material, starting in 84/85 and ending with 87/88, was because of their presence in his life.

th' hell? for all i saw, mayte brought ol' boy no more than "just another pretty face". yeah, she gave 'im a child too, but in the bitter end she was just another "prince chick", no matter how you slice it.

Jeez How can u say that? Were u there with 'em spying what they told him. Prince didn't wait 4 Mayte 2 b in love (Vanity & Susannah at least were very important stories) nor did he wait 4 Larry 2 believe in God (have u LISTENED 2 Prince's lyrics in the 80's?)... How would u know who had which influence? But also, the Purple One himself is responsible for neutering his relationship with his true muses, Wendy and Lisa. All the GREAT material, starting in 84/85 and ending with 87/88, was because of their presence in his life. The girls, with Eric Leeds, WERE a great influence 4 Prince at the time. Neverthless, he was a genius B4 they came on board & remained a genius after they left. Prince cannot b reduced 2 W&L & eric. Don't take it personnal, fella

Its really annoying with this W & L shit.
They had their time, affected some of his music , and thats it. No biggie. Prince probably sang "Im so glad we HAD this time together".

She was just a kid when she met him so I'm sure she didn't even know who she was, how she felt on things and since Prince was such a prominate figure in her world she probably looked up to him a great deal and adopted some of his way of thinking. Probably unconciously she thought " I really want him to like me" and formed herself to be what he wanted in a woman...not for any manipulative reasons but because she genuinly was in love with him and wanted his approval. Mayte always struck me as a woman who was unsure of herself in her younger years as all young women can be kinda insecure. She seems like she was pretty compliant to Prince. In that way she seems kinda different than Denise Matthews because I don't think she saw Prince in the same light. She seemed like the type of person to give it to him straight while Mayte seemed to go along with whatever his views were at the time. Denise Matthews kinda has a strong personality like Prince and has her own views and own way of looking at things...she is around the same age as Prince and there are just certain things you have in common with someone if they are from the same generation. Mayte seems to have alot more easy going of a personality although she seems much more sure of herself nowadays. I'm not saying that Prince and Mayte were not in love...I'm sure they were but their almost seemed to be a daughter/father aspect to their marriage ( I don't mean that in a preverted way) and Denise and Prince had a much more "equal" or "balanced" relationship because of his celebrity was not on the same level as it was when Mayte came into the picture. That has GOT to have a affect on all his relationships unfourtantly...his level of fame at the time. This is just how I see it...what it looks like to an outsider but as it goes without saying we don't know really at all if Mayte was a phoney, Prince a manipulator or they had geninune love between one another. I do think Prince and Mayte did have a close bond though. There is just something about her that he just loves...probably still loves. During the Mayte years Prince seemed to try a lot harder to be social, do interviews, chat it up and be all chummy with people like Sinbad. It was kind of sad to watch. My take on it is that Mayte made Prince feel "normal." She probably intuitively understood Prince's emotional needs, and I'd conjecture his biggest need was to feel like a normal, ordinary guy. That would explain his sudden socializing, and how his music during that period was mostly mediocre. He was on a "normal" trip. For a guy used to being weird and eccentric, it must've been a novelty to act and feel like any average lovestruck boy. He recorded COVER SONGS, for crying out loud. He was at his least original when serenading Mayte. I definitely thought Prince's behavior was affected by Mayte in those years...some great music..but was his "bad boy" or "tough guy" acts/image ...was that for merit in the hip/hop & rap community audience, or was it because Mayte was the type who likes bad boys, and he played the part? I'm just throwing things out there, she did get w/Tommy Lee, which says alot (and not that great of a reflection on her character, and if this seems to judging, well, Tommy Lee's a scumbag-- sensitive and I like his musicianship on drums/piano, yes, at least when he's not in prison, hooking up w/prostitutes, beating women, drugs, etc..all in his bio by the way). Other than the Oprah interview, when he decided to act like a peaceful pixie, his public demeanor seemed antagonistic, grudgy (new word?), speaking in riddles, and cold. 1999 came along and he seemed back to normal and much better attitude/demeanor today. But...that's just my take from public images, who knows...there's so much illusion in the press.

Those were probably the worst years for me as a Prince fan. He seemed obsessed with Mayte and being young and hip for her. He seemed so caught up in selling the idea of this fairy tale romance that his music took a backseat. He didn't really seem to enjoy playing and his performances seemed so mechanical with little of his trademark audience teasing/playful interaction. The deeper he got into that relationship, the darker he seemed. I think the fight with Warner also played a part. I am sorry that things turned out the way they did for him and Mayte with regard to the baby, but it really seems that it was for the better.
Whatever the case, those were some sorry times for this Prince fan. What do you all think about the Mayte years? I define "the Mayte years" as the time following Come and up to "Rave." Rave I consider the Mayte fallout. I think the dispute with Warner Bros. spilled over his realtionship with Mayte and the way he came across. Based on the Tommy Lee interview in VH1, she appears to be immature and whiny. Prince was so in love with her...maybe to the point of distraction.

The Mani years. I love how we are assigning years to the women.
