I don't understand why it's such a wondermint to folks. How can any person who is hipped to P on any level not realize that P can straight burn on his axe? He's been doing it since the get go. It seems like the folks who ask this question are themselves, doubting P's skills as a guitarist. Cuz dig, if u truly believe something, you're not going to wonder what other's think and u definately won't give a fuck what they think either way. U don't have people asking all the damn time some shit like "Hey u guys, was Hendrix a really great guitarist?" You'll never hear that and u know why? Cuz everybody knows that he was. It goes without saying. And that's how it should be for P and because it isn't on this board, baffles the hell out of me.
Word. To answer why it comes up. Prince really is known for his singing and dancing 1st. Hendrix didn't do that shit. If Prince straight up played guitar like when he does when he is tearing up the axe, then people would indentify with him in the respect. However, its cool that Prince is multidimensional as an artist. People ask if he can dance and people ask if he can sing too. People wonder how one guy can do all that. [Edited 6/16/06 11:39am] huh singing and dancing?? Prince??? r u sure? think u'r talkin' about MJ

Ronny said: If you're going to mention particular performances - FURY on SNL is probably the best display of his skill and showmanship...
I've heard from a few insiders that he holds back big time and that he is much more into the 'whole picture' than showing off. If anyone has seen him live, he's a monster. He can play pretty much anything he hears and can jump from genre to genre. Back when I was in the Minneapolis music scene for a hot minute, all the guys who were really good were in awe of his musicianship. Think about it. He's been playing since he's been how old? Ten? Sixteen? His only full-time job has been as a musician. He surrounds himself with world-class musicians. He can afford any gear he wants. He's no joke on guitar. I just wish he would do SNL Fury stuff on record! LOL, we always want to put him in a box, and he just goes off and do what HE wanna do. Some people tell me I've got great legs...

BlaqueKnight said: Virtuosos amaze even the best of the good guitarists almost every time they pick the instrument up. People use Steve Vai's quote as if Steve stood up and said "he's better than me or equal to me". That was not the case. He likes Prince and thinks he's good. I doubt seriously if he thinks Prince is AS GOOD as he is. I'll ask him the next time I see him.
- That´s why I dont consider Prince a virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Guys like John Mc Laughlin, George Benson, Eddie Van Halen, etc represent more this term than Prince. But in terms of technique/speed, he owes nothing to some considered great guitar players, such as Jeff Beck, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, etc. I think one of the things that make Prince underrated as a player is the fact that he doesnt make music for musicians, and he doesnt play guitar all the time in his shows. Guys like Kenny Wayne and Jonny Lang are always playing the guitar and almost every song has solos. About Steve Vai, here is his quote about Prince (Steve Lukather spoke too) TM: "What do you think of Prince as a guitar player?" SV: "I was given a bootleg of jamming at Paisley Park and there was song Tender Surrender--I turned it on and he was jamming to one of my songs. I was stunned into silence. He was playing great on it." SL: "I loved solo Purple Rain. My thing with him is sound is really processed. He's got a lot of heart. You got to love Prince. I really dig his stuff." - I wouldnt think that Vai thinks he is as good as him, but he respects the guy as a player, at least.

Steve Vai has tons of respect for Prince...He's quoted as saying his wife had a Purple Rain album in 84 and he wasn't into the accompanying media acclaim and didn't care for it ..then he heard Around the World..and had a whole new appreciation for Prince and bought every album since then. Vai also has played all the other instruments (except live drums) on many of his songs, including the mixing and even does his own mastering now, so the one man band thing continues.... Business-wise Vai never sold his masters and is quoted as saying the money wasn't worth it. He also has his own record label, Favored Nations, which puts more money in the pocket of the artist.

However, I didn't really absorb "Lovesexy" because it was so hectic in the arena. After viewing the concert at the "quake" site, it was a fact that Prince is indeed a virtuoso on guitar. Why you ask? He plays a bluesy bit "If I had a Harem." He plays a clean electric guitar and starts with a easy lick. The camera pans out and comes back, Prince is now sitting down preparing to jam. To every guitar player's surprise, Prince runs through a couple phrases on the guitar that could only compare to when I went to this jazz club and the player knocked it out. That confirmed it. Not just a rock player God, but in fact a highly skilled jazz player, what we players call a "virtuoso." The answer is yes. Check it out for yourself on that site. Its #2 or #3 I believe. 1st song. [Edited 6/14/06 21:47pm] I know the part you're talking about, its nice playing but the couple of fast runs he does aren't that tricky (even I can play them) and he actually fucks up at the end of one of them and gives up on the flashy stuff. The stuff he does play is really tasteful though." - quote Prince fucks up perhaps by over-muffling. I wouldn't say it was fucked up, in fact I would like to see you post yourself playing it on youtube or something. Yeah, its a challenge (I'll eat my words if you prove yourself). And.... BTW, Prince can play much better than George Benson, although George was pretty good. [Edited 6/15/06 23:51pm] I made it all the way down to here without replying.
