I one read Purple Rain was third highest grossing movie of '84 behind Ghostbusters and Gremlins.

Prior to the film Prince was a star in the States and a relatively unknown artist elsewhere. People forget that.

He was a man with a plan even back then. He knew this 'project' (film/movie) would get him heard worldwide and not just in the U.S.

Here's my problem:

If Tom has three times as many apples as Susan and Susan has one-fourth as many as Joe (who has four), how many does Mary have if she has two more than Tom?

Let me know when you've figured it out. Thanks for asking! smile

I know that a consensus has pretty much been made but I just have to say that the Purple Rain album was so successful simply because the music was so freakin' fantastic. Every single song associated with that project from the album, to all of the B-sides, to the unreleased score in the movie, was brilliant. I mean come on....the B-sides alone would have sold that ablum. Erotic City, 17 Days, Another Lonely Christmas, and God? Quite simply, brilliant.

Then we have to define success from what you said. Is success defined as a cd or album with the majority of its content being good? Without MTV or the movie or a lot of marketing for the time by Warner Brothers, yes, the music stands on its own to the core group of listeners of prince's music.

Or is success a lot of record sales? If that is the case, then this is also successful, but because of the push by the big boys, Warners, and MTV.
It was like a virus, that music, back in '83 and '84. Perpetuated by the movie and the videos. It would have spread somewhat without those things backing it up, but would have died out sooner than it did. However, with the corporate push of an already great album (content-wise) it was made even bigger.

Yes but can't we say that about other Prince albums? Look at the sales for Sign of the Times.

That explains why Glitter, Dirty Dancing Havana Nights, and From Justin to Kelly kicked ass on the charts.

It’s my position that the ONLY reason the Purple Rain cd sold so many copies was because it was attached to the movie and it represents the ONLY real time that Prince played the MTV/Video “game”. I do NOT believe that cd would have sold some 13 plus million copies without the movie. Prince music was good before PR and after, yet it represents his greatest sales. Why? Because Prince capitalized on the imagery of the film. That movie more than any other in my opinion represented the change and shift in music from the substance of the MUSIC to the imagery of the film/video.

If there was ever any doubt, just look at Prince’s cd sales figures before and after Purple Rain. What’s different? There is no movie attached to the other cd’s. The music and the QUALITY of the music are just as good.

I can see that. The movie was after all one long video for the album.

a couple points:

1) i discovered Purple Rain the album before I discovered the movie...but then I also discovered Wendy & Lisa before I discovered Prince. giggle

2) Roger Ebert once said that Purple Rain was one of the best rock movies because of the music and concert performances...and i'd have to agree.

3) ehhh..thats it from me...toodles!!!

Graycap23, you've hit upon the nature of marketing tie-ins. Everything from a movie-themed Happy Meal to the latest music video hinges upon the value of consumers' associations:

"If we tie one product to another, we increase the odds that consumers will buy at least one of them -- maybe both." deal

This thread sucks. Purple Rain sold a lot because the music is the best he's ever made. The music was revolutionary and catchy at the same time.

The movie blows. It's only enjoyable because it's centered around Prince and the music, which is ingenius.

Oh It's remarkably easy. Pick a divisive subject matter and wrap it in a semi-controversial statement - a post that's a bit outside the realm of conventional thinking - then watch the replies roll in. It helps even more if the subject is critical in some way.

Look around here. What gets all the hits? 'Prince is Gay', 'Prince is an overrated guitarist', Revolution is better than NPG, MJ is a bigger star, etc. Go over to P&R and see what gets talked about: Gay and race baiting threads, 'Jesus was a terrorist', '9/11 was a conspiracy'...

It's sort of an art in its own way.

Republicans do it all the time.

I agree and disagree at the same time. I agree that the movie itself as a movie (acting, storyline) sucks major balls. It's only watchable due to the music and performances imo. It's like Graffiti Bridge with a bigger budget and more professionalism.

I disagree though that the PR music is the best he's ever made. Maybe it was the catchiest he's ever made (therefore the commercial success), but Prince has made better stuff after PR imo.
