I prefer the songs released during the Revolution period, but the NPG is so much better as a band it's not even funny.

The main strength of the Revolution was Lisa and Wendy's contributions, moreso than the strengths of the band as a whole.
His soul shall taste the sadness of her might,
And be among her cloudy trophies hung.

The Revolution for their personality and the songs produced during that time period.

But in terms of a live setting, I gotta go with...

yes. the npg and the revolution both have their strongpoints but i'm going to have to go for the middle ground and say the lovesexy/sott band was the best band prince has ever had.

I love the revolution but the early 90s NPG is easily the funkiest band Prince ever had...Sonny, Michael, Tommy, Mr Hayes...and some skinny gay guy on guitar.

No question....it has to be the Revolution/SIgn O the Times bands, if only for consistency. The majority of that cod synth funk that the NPG knocked out is lame in comparison

it's hard 2 pick 'cause both bands were crucial to Prince's artistic evolution and they both could throw down in the studio or live....

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

The Revolution was the best for me, although I love the early 90's NPG (Call The Law era).

The LoveSexy band and the various configurations of the NPG are all light years ahead of the Revolution with regard to musicianship. Wendy and Lisa are talented songwriters whose influence and collaborations created some great songs, but musically they were just not talented enough to challenge Prince and grow with him/his sound. When you look at people like Miko, Levi, Sonny T, Sheila E., John Blackwell and Michael B., the Revolution could not hold a candle to their musicianship. The Revolution were probably the weakest players he's hand. Dez Dickerson and Andre Cymone were actually more talented and better complements to Prince musically on guitar and bass than Wendy and Brown Mark.

That said, it is always good for Prince to change bands to challenge him to move in different directions. I think he and the last NPG fell into a funk/jam groove that began to repeat itself and focused more on songs that sounded like jam sessions than well-constructed songs with melodies/harmonies. Always good to have new blood.

well it's not tru that revolution were not a good musicians
brown mark-maYBE THE FUNKIEST bass player prince ever had, andre close second.

matt fink-excelent virtuoso keyboard

bobby z is overlooked-his misfortune was to come in an era of drum machine dominated sound of music,
if you listen to bobby on atlanta 1980 rick james concert you are going to be suprised how good he was.

wendy was awful lead guitar player very sloopy, but she improved on rhythm guitar on parade tour.

the revolution had distinctive sound.npg is more a palete of sounds.
but im glad prince disbaned revolution,he needed to grow more.
wendy and lisa couldn't play his more adventures music like madhouse, news ,trc...
