Tamar Davis Debut Disc Milk & Honey to Hit Stores August 29th; Prince Protege to Perform Live With Superstar On ABC's GMA June 16th

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2006--U don't know me, nor do eye know u, But eye saw U years ago searching 4 a sound that a siren would make...So begins Tamar Davis' seductive introduction on her website, slyly touting her much anticipated debut album, Milk & Honey, (in-stores on August 29th) to a world about to get to know her as more than another Prince protege. A Houston Texas native and a Prince understudy since the tender age of 14, the young singer/songwriter wisely took to heart the first rule the mercurial Prince ever taught her - 'Don't do what everybody else is doing.' "After that," says Tamar, "I never looked back."

She'll be embodying that motto in the flesh on June 16th when she performs with Prince live on ABC's Good Morning America as part of their 2006 concert series. She wowed fans and critics a few weeks ago with two show-stopping performances with her mentor (May 27, 28th) at Las Vegas' Empire Ballroom, majestically transformed as the 3121 club - renamed after Prince's new smash album - and christened by a versatile Tamar performance that included sizzling selections from the soon-to-be released Milk & Honey, including the sultry title track, the groove-tinged "Every Little Step," and a searing duet with Prince, "Red Head Stepchild," among others. The first single from Tamar's new album, "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed," (which she co-wrote with Prince and debuted on his recently released #1 Universal album), has already whetted musical appetites across the globe for this gifted multi-instrumentalist who is about to claim her rightful place in the musical spotlight.

One of the original lead vocalists in an early incarnation of Destiny's Child called Tyme, Tamar had been honing her craft since childhood, eventually becoming one of only 20 high school students to be named a Presidential Scholar for the arts from a field of 8000 applicants. She also earned a degree in composing and arranging from USC, reuniting with Prince soon after for an even more intense musical tutelage with the prolific artist. The two shared writing and production chores on Milk & Honey, as well as a series of tantalizing stage events to cleverly introduce the charismatic Tamar, including this past February's 2006 Brit Awards (along with other Prince mavens such as Sheila E. and Wendy & Lisa), and a top-rated Saturday night Live performance. If the growing online buzz about Tamar's upcoming appearance on ABC's GMA is an accurate indicator, the mesmerizing artist is indeed about to make a name for herself all her own.

i'll stop by virgin and sample it first. she was great live but i'm afraid a whole disc produced by prince may not be too good. his own records aren't up to his standards so i have my doubts about a protege at this stage of the game.

if the album cover is a clue, this cd will be a little sketchy.

Is this officially, the official cover? I really hope not...it makes me less excited about the whole thing. It's one thing to be neutral about something...especially if you're going to get it anyway...but this one can almost prejudice you against the CD.

On Your Own (1994)

Yeah
Oh, yeah, yeah

U probably wonderin' why I called U here
Somebody told me, mm, U were cryin' tears
Now I wanna know if this is true
Then tell me, baby, tell me, tell me
Why U wanna do the things U do?

Wanted everything that money could buy
Now U're broke and lonely and U don't know why
Don't bother callin' cuz there ain't nobody home

Mm, U're on your own (On your own)
Yeah, U're on your own (On your own)
Your love is gone (Love is gone)
U're on your own (On your own)

Listen...
She gave U diamonds
She gave U pearls
Ooh, she gave U boys, yes she did
She gave U girls, oh oh

She can't give U a love like this
The kinda lovin' that U can't resist
Don't bother callin' cuz there ain't nobody home

Mm, U're on your own (On your own)
U're on your own (On your own)

Looka here
La la la la la la la la la la la la, la da da, la da da, da {x2}

If I had a dime, ooh, and a nickel 2 (Ooh)
4 every wasted line that I heard from U (Ooh)
I could buy a mansion, oh yes I could, on a mountain top, ooh
Money, money, money jumpin' out of my pockets
It would never stop, ooh, help me Lord

U're fine as wine but if the truth be told
Won't nobody wantcha (when U're ass is old), U know it
U, U, U, U...

U're on your own (On your own)
Yeah, love is gone (Love is gone)
U're on your own (On your own)

Looka here
La la la la la la la la la la la la, la da da, la da da, da {x2}

Of all the years U've known me
3 times that and then some U owe me
Huh, U're on your own

Yeah, U're on your own
Ooh yeah (Ooh)
Your love is gone (On your own)
Your love is gone (Ooh)
Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby (On your own)
Your love is gone (Ooh)
Keep on walkin', I ain't talkin' (On your own)
U're on your own (Ooh)
Keep on walkin', I ain't talkin' (On your own)
U're on your own (On your own)
1 (On your own)
2 (Love is gone)
3 (On your own)
I'm outta here, ha ha ha (On your own)
(On your own) {fade out}
(Love is gone)
(On your own)

I wish Prince and Tamar the best, but I don't think this album is going to do anything. Without the power of a big record company and lots of marketing behind you, very few new artists ever amount to much popularity.

The most important thing of course if it the album is good and it probably will be pretty good if Prince put some time and effort into it.

Why are they adamant on using that picture as the cover? It looks like she has sperm all over her hands. confused

I guess it sort of does explain Prince's fascination with producing and writing this chick's record instead of focusing on his own projects. That picture is just too much of a giveaway.

Wasn't her the orig Destiny's CHild group called "[BLANK]TYME"? Like he forgot part of the name??

And she is a "multi-intsrumentalist??" Really? That is cool; what instruments?

I just realized her hands are supposed to be in milk and honey respectively.

the other album cover (the 3121 insert) was so much prettier...

isn't her own natural beauty - not to mention TALENT - enough? because she does seem to be terribly talented, and for that i'm looking forward to buying this album...

why must we always pander to the lowest common denominator? i thought prince wasn't about that anymore. there's certainly no need when actually TALENT is involved!

These would make much better album covers. But from some of those "drunken" pics of the twinz that I've seen it seems like he wants his girls to look weird, or he needs some geek It won't be an album I'll buy, if I buy it, because of the great artwork... Hopefully the really important thing, the music, will make up for it.

2. 3121, a smash album? hmmm

3. Wonder if THIS release date will stick...shoot, the original one was advertised on the mini flyers packaged with 3121! confused

Here's another article that was posted over at the club by papaj

“My music is about originality; nothing fake.” In a music world rife with cookie-cutter talent, Tamar Davis is a rarity. That’s because she brings the total package to the table: Passionate singer. Gifted songwriter. Mesmerizing live performer. No less an authority than Prince divined her triple-threat talent when he first offered her a production contract at the age of 14. But don’t be quick to dismiss her as just a Prince protégé. Tamar Davis deserves to be recognized in her own right.

“MILK & HONEY,” her solo debut on Universal Republic Records, will quell any doubt. A tasty mélange of funk, R&B, soul, gospel, jazz, rock and pop, “Milk & Honey” showcases Davis’ finesse at pairing cutting-edge sensibilities with a classic vibe. But the musical bottom line for her boils down to one thing: it has to be personal.

“I can’t write or sing anything without knowing the reason behind it,” says Davis. “Once that idea is established, I make sure to tell a story that allows the listener to visualize and experience the song with me.”

Whether jump-starting the party or pondering love’s twists and turns, Davis—to borrow a line from funky lead single “Holla & Shout”—“will make ya wanna holla.” Each song on “MILK & HONEY” is a story unto itself that showcases Davis’ intriguing versatility. Atmospheric love ballad “All I Want Is U” subtly plays up the soul and jazz nuances that color her feel-this vocals. On the pulsating “Red Head Stepchild,” Davis plugs into her head-banging, rock persona. Another ballad, “First Love,” will leave you marveling at her penchant for arranging, while “Kept Woman” calls to mind one of Davis’ early musical influences, Steely Dan. Then there’s the roof-raising, gospel-charged “Holy Ground.”

Recording “MILK & HONEY” at Prince’s Minneapolis studio was a ground-up process. “This album was driven first by the bass line,” explains Davis. “I’d sit at the piano and play the bass line. Then I’d bring in live musicians to build on that bass line. Afterwards, I would harmonize a melody on top of that, just humming or singing la, la, la. The longer I grooved to the track, I would begin to feel something personal.”

Davis’ feel for music dates back to the age of three when she started singing and dancing in her hometown of Houston. At nine she began professional voice lessons and was selected as one of the lead vocalists in the group Girls Thyme—now known as Destiny’s Child. While with Girls Thyme, Davis appeared on “Star Search.”

Continuing her education, she went on to become one of only 20 high school students to be named a Presidential Scholar for the Arts from a field of 8000 applicants. During her school years, Davis honed her skills by listening to such influences as Chaka Khan, Graham Central Station, Sting, Jennifer Holiday and Barbra Streisand.

After graduating from Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Davis relocated to Los Angeles where she earned a music degree from the University of Southern California. Able to write and arrange music, Davis can also sing in French, German, Swahili and Italian.

Davis and Prince—for whom she recorded a song at 14—reconnected following her graduation from USC. That led to her doing vocals on his latest album, “3121,” as well as co-writing their duet and international hit, “Beautiful, Loved and Blessed.” The song also appears on “MILK & HONEY.”

For Davis, the scenario doesn’t end with the writing and singing. She loves to perform. Audiences got a quick peak at her stage alter ego when Davis performed with Prince on “Saturday Night Live” and the Brit Grammy Awards.

“My music is about originality; nothing fake,” emphasizes Davis. “When people see me, I want them to feel that originality. And when I leave the stage, I want to leave them with their spirits revived.”

Which brings us back to a key lesson she learned early on from Prince: “Don’t do what everybody else is doing.”

Tamar Davis takes that lesson straight to heart on “MILK & HONEY.”
