John L Nelson's Lost Album Ft. Prince I got a question...
I've asked all kinds of P fans if they know, heard of this/it.....None have I cant remember the date, But im sure it was in 1989. [or around this time] It was MTV NEWS..here in the U.S....[I know cause i taped it on VHS].... They said Prince's father John L Nelson's was releasing a new album, [Independit i think,, And i might be wrong, but they showed a cover 4 it] Then they said it was something, more like an EP...Called "Fathers Song" It featured a few versions of F.S...and i think a couple other song's And Feature's someone called "Gemini" on Guitar Of course MTV knew it was Prince as they hinted How he gos under alias's And hes a gemini.... Then they said it would hit stores in a month or so.... Did it ever come out...any info on it im guessing not...cause ive never heard, seen, read about this anywhere... my guess no has heard either...and this will fade away... Like i said i got this on vhs somewhere...but i have about 15 vhs tapes of prince stuff from 86 - 99..and dont feel like looking for this 2-3 minute clip

someone on here posted a few months back and said they owned a copy of this album. i don't know if the person was BSing, or if it was ever released. it would have been pre-internet, so i'm guessing it might have just been given a meager local release in mpls?

I know he co-wrote "Scandalous"...
Did they do anything else together?

I have it. The CD is called "Father's Song" although that song is not on the CD.
The guitar work is credited to "Gemini" but it's Prince. Tracklisting: 1. Yes Again 2. There'd be no-way for You and I 3. As I recall 4. BTW, I never saw it in a store. I ran into Sharon Nelson at a club in NYC sometime in the early-to-mid-90's. After she told me who she was and I went beserk because I was actually talking to Prince's sister, she gave me her card and a copy of the CD. I gave her mine and told her I could book John L. at some of the better clubs in Houston. She said he was going to do a small tour but I never heard from her, and I don't think John L. played Houston (or anywhere else that I've heard of).

Oh yeah, last thing. The front cover is purple, with a full-length picture of John L. in all white with pimp red boots, pointing and winking at the camera.
The back side is black with white lettering.

Moderator | Tracklisting: 1. Yes Again 2. There'd be no-way for You and I 3. As I recall 4. Fallin' Down I got a boot in 95 or 96 called "Platinum" and it has those 4 songs on it. They sound more like demos to me. Maybe they had more work done to them? "Yes Again" is pretty funky, jazz influenced with a coltrane vibe on the piano. There's a Prince voice sample that appears throughout the song that goes "Yes Again". The back-beat is a drum machine and a some pretty funky bass slaps. Lots of organ and a guitar solo as well. "There'd Be No Way for You and I" is a gospel tune with a female spoken lyrics and male sung chorus. I don't hear Prince vocaly on this one. The chorus goes "A savior lived to die, so there'd be a way for you and I". "As I Recall" is a jazz instrumental with a chorus vocal line that appears now and then that simply says "As I Recall". Voices sound the same as the previous song. "Fallin' Down" sounds the same as "Yes Again" but without the vocal tracks. Different Piano too. In the liner notes, these songs are listed as being part of the album "Father's Song" by John L. Nelson. Those are the last tracks of the disk. The first are the songs from "I'll do Anything" as well as an award speech ran backswards a "Box Talk" (T.V. Show) commercial (voices from the NPG members) for the Gold Experience album and some tracks that sound like they were from the orginal recordings. All Rights Reserved. |

does it sound as if papa nelson was singing on these songs at all? if so, i'm very curious about what his voice is like. i heard him talk on one of those "access hollywood" type shows once, but i've always wondered what he was like as a musician/performer.

I have Platinum too, it instantly sprung to mind when I saw the thread. I must dig it out and listen to those tracks, I doubt I've ever spun that boot since I got it must be 10 years ago now 95/96.

No. The male sung chorus on the second and third songs sound like younger studio session peoples. There is a brief "Ok, now here's where you gonna sing some shit right here now, right?" on the song "Yes Again" It also has some effects on it so I really can't tell who it is.
