There are 4 versions.
Two versions are from a rehearsalw eher one is played straight after the other. A third version is from the rehearsal for the First Avenue concert. The fourth version is the live performance from First Avenue. Prince is reported to have taken this live performance (which of course was recorded) and worked on it further in LA. There have been reports that this recording circulates. I suspect, if it does, it is limited circulation. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I'm not sure of the precise date - check out the tracklisting for Purple Rush Volume 2 (The Second Coming) More detail: Version 1: Prince is teaching the song to the Revolution. He sings a higher harmony than the melody sung in the First Avenue gig reharsal and gig. The first lines are: 'Feel some kind of love for you I don't even know your name' ... after which he gives the sound instruction: "It's real dark ... take some bottom off' He guides the group through when to play chorus and when to play verse by call outs. Version 2 appears to run straight after version 1 beginning 'Top, intro, we'd like to do a thing right now, fantasy' He then sings in a lower register than Version 1 He is still calling out instructions ('chorus' and 'verse') as well as 'too early'. Version 3 is the gig rehearsal where he calls 'Wake up, Wendy' Version 4 - live version ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

The rehearsal version that is on The Work, for example, was created during an Alt.Music.Prince battle between Tim and I. Tim as in T. Satim. Whatever you call him now that he's old hat. The end of the deal was to prove he had what it takes and he coughed up a clean version of the rehearsal of Electric Intercourse (which equated to some instructional vocals being dropped and the "Auntie Em!" vocals as well). Electric Intercourse didn't get past minor noodling in the studio. Sorry to burst your folk lore bubble.

For the sake of clarity, are you saying the work that Prince is supposed to have done on the live version: 1. didn't happen or 2. might have happened, but there's no known circulating evidence that you are aware of or something else entirely and I've got the wrong end of the stick [Edited 6/10/06 4:18am] ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. Ooooh I love "Electric Intercourse", what a great song!
The version I have is a "clean" version, meaning I don't have the one where Prince is instructing the Revolution how the song is to be played. Speaking of Prince teaching the band how to play a song, on a totally unrelated subject, I have a Purple Rain tour rehearsal tape where the band was getting ready for the tour. There is a part where Prince gets pissed at somebody and hollers, "If you put the FUCKIN magazine down and play your part!!!" You can tell he is PISSED at somebody. OMG, the first time a friend of mine played it for me, I fell out laughing, that shit is sooooo funny even now. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

They do exist exactly as detailed in a later post. The version you mention is a fan edit and not really an "official" version. [Edited 6/10/06 9:20am]

I know i have 2 different versions.. one on video and on with the "i sing the first intercourse the first one" (or something like that) and the one on video from the 83 1st ave charaty show (from which much of purple rain was directly lifted) but like has been pointed out... some of what are called 'other versions' are just edits and i think in at least one case a mix of 2 them. thoes that were around when AMP and the PML were pretty much it...should know T... and some of the stuff he did.. and how at least on of his cds was stolend by a well known bootleger...looks around... and sold. the messed up thing was i never got on his list for princmass...
