P has actually sold more copies that LL Cool J's latest and Pink's latest, and they both got significant airplay on their first singles. Considering radio has completely shut 3121 out, I guess that is a small victory.

Dont expect much of a spike off Good Morning America, its the lowest rated of the 3 shows on in the morning. Usually the today show concert series has much more of a spike for sales for artists.

So near, yet so far off Gold certification. I cannot believe that more copies of Rave were sold than 3121.

You're right not to believe it because it's wrong. Rave sold 500,000 and was certified Gold (official RIAA number according to Housequake). 3121 probably has Gold status already since the shipped units count for that, and you can be rather sure that the missing 65,000 copies are in US stores or stocks already.

According to your logic, all the following albums are terrible as they were all certified Gold "only" (official RIAA numbers):

Dirty Mind
Lovesexy
Graffiti Bridge
Come
The Gold Experience
Rave

Yes indeed, especially the first five are good examples for terrible albums!

And FYI, the only reason why SOTT received Platinum in the US is the fact that it's a double album, hence sales are formally multiplied by 2. It originally sold 500,000 copies (RIAA number, housequake.com). Again, a good example for a terrible album!!!

Let's not even talk about Prince albums that failed to get ANY certificate. That includes The Rainbow Children...

I am shocked at the low sales for SOTT in the US.That makes no sense to me.It was his best album since 'Purple Rain'!

According to Metalorange's post on this thread:

http://www.prince.org/msg/7/191372

the worldwide sales were around 4 million copies. That indicates that the overseas sales of SOTT were relatively better than the US sales. But that can't make a point here since the performance of 3121 on the US chart is the topic.

Nice try. I said a terrible album DESERVES terrible sales. I didn't say all albums that don't sell are terrible. There's lots of great stuff out there that sells like shite. But in this case, crap like 3121 deserves what it's getting if not less.
No hard feelings.

To make some things clear:

When Sign of the Times was certified Platinum by RIAA back in 1997 the rule of counting the individual CDs inside a double or triple or higher CD set was not yet being applied. This rule only started to be applied in certifications in 1992 and only for 3xCD (three) or higher (like 4xCD) sets.
Only later, in 1997, double CD albums were also allowed to use use such rule. But only albums released before 1982 (the first year that CDs were available) can have their CD version (double or higher) certified by counting individual CDs inside the set.
For albums released after 1982 , the rule only applies IF the time lenght of the album is above 100 minutes, if the 2 CDs inside a set have a total time running bellow 100 minutes the album is not considered a multi-disk set for certificatios purposes, not matter how many vynil or CD disks it contains.

Back in 1992 sales figures of Prince albums were made available.
At that time Sign of the Times had sales of 1,900,000 double-albums outside USA and 1,600,000 double-albums in USA, well above the necessary for a Platinum certification in US, and so can be considered a commercial sucess.

Another figure for Sign of the Times:
since January 1991 to december 2005, it sold, according to Soundscan, more than 270,000 (double-albums) copies in US.

Presently its estimated worldwide sales stand a bit over the 4 million mark.

That sounds more like it...I definitely recall it being quite commercially successful! wink

So whose website is a good source of info on record sales? Not just for Prince but for any artist?
