In terms of songwriting, Emancipation is one of Prince's best work. If it displays Prince's variety in musical styles to your full satisfaction might be a different topic (many people think it lacks some rougher, unpolished sounds), but you simply can't argue about the quality of the composition imo.

Some people on here are accusing Prince of using a lot of "filler" material in his 90s work, but the same people are defending albums with songs like "I Wonder U", "Life Can Be So Nice", "Dance On" or "Positivity" on them. All nice tunes, but you can look for the melodic inspiration with the microscope! biggrin

but those songs (well, with the exception of Dance On) all have interesting elements that were new to the prince catalog. nowadays, the filler songs all sound like something he's already done...IMHO.

as far as Emancipation. Theres just way way way too much unimaginative, uninspiring and downright lazy crap on there to even consider it on par w/ Parade, Lovesexy or even TRC or 3121. We Gets Up anyone? Courtin Time? Emale? Style?

lazy lazy lazy...

disbelief

IMHO

mr.green

You're right. I wouldn't consider Emancipation on par with Parade. I consider it to be superior! evillol

But to get back on track (meaning Prince's 80s work).: Is there anyone else agreeing with me that ATWIAD is better than Parade and Lovesexy?

I always considered Lovesexy justa notch below Parade.

Neither a commericial record from Prince they were just brilliant in every since of the word.

Parade is just a masterpeice. P and the Revolution just weaving in out of styles just effortlessly. It is just so artsy, and funky and uneven, and a ecclectic mess and it works.

Lovesexy is so different musically more personal statement. P's lyrics aren't as strong here. Glam Slam thank you mame...but the music and arrangement of that song as so magnificent it makes up for the corny lyrics. The string section at the end leading into Anna Stesia is amazing. In fact Eye Know into Alphabet St is sick...the record flows so effortlessly. Both records remastered would be amazing. Really while commericial and Pop records like Purple Rain and 1999 were amazing it is Parade, Sign and Lovesexy that seperates Prince from his peers of the time like Bruce S, Michael Jackson and Madonna. These are the records that made it clear that Prince simply was operating in another stratusphere compared the these mere mortals.

love both records....with Parade being my personal pick if I had to chose

gosh.....I guess to each there own...but I don't many people who could legitimately make a claim that the over blown and bloated Emmancipation is even in the same league as Parade. To me thats just amazing

I feel like Prince was very disciplined and parsimonious on this record -- a great self-editor (which is not often the case).

I have to dispute this. I don't think Parade is a disciplined record at all... and that's why I love it. Yes, instrumentally it's sparse and airy, but that doesn't mean that Prince was meticulous or paid special attention to superfluous elements. Don't forget that P just sat down and played the entire drum track for the first 3 songs in one sitting (and one take, IIRC) Parade is the sound of an incredibly talented musician... gone wild.

When Prince thinks about his work too much or adopts an overly disciplined approach to a record, that's when - IMO - you end up with stuff like some of the lesser moments on Emancipation and 3121 etc.

Not that either of those records are bad. And while this thread is amazing, the title of it should be made a crime. Making people choose between two albums as good as that...

The illegal equation:

[Any Prince album or track] or [Any Prince album or track]?

To answer your question, Lovesexy. But my general response when someone asks me something like this is:

All of Prince's albums from the 80's are great, with 1999/PR/SOTT being untouchable.

Well let's put it like this: Parade is like The Revolution's own "White Album", even though the follow-up, Sign O The Times might be given that title! Anybody ever thought of that?

LoveSexy...this is the record that proved to me that P was on another level than most musicians/artists...ATWIAD, SOTT, & Parade were all departures from what I had grown used to from him but LoveSexy was the first one to make me say "Huh?"...In my own lil' Prince fan world, it challenged me and nobody else had done that before...

The only Prince album I like is Diamonds and Pearls and Graffiti Bridge.

The rest is pretty lame.

Lovesexy?? Is that a joke? It sounds like some stupid word a school-kid would make up. Anyone that likes that sort of rubbish has got no idea.

Parade is just made up of a pile of crap. It has no fluidity to it and no descent beat. It just sounds like a lot of noise.

I don't mind SOTT. I find it a bit tinny though and it sounds really dated these days.

I really think Prince is over-rated. The only decent tunes he did were in the 90's. Songs like Gett Off and Cream. They were REAL songs. Songs about going out and getting laid. He was very cool then.

Songs like Kiss are just embarrasing. The lyrics make him sound about 12. I HATE that stuff. It's really sad. You'ed have to be one sad mutha fucca to like that!
Shut up already, damn.

Up until recently, my vote would've instantly gone to Parade - But I've been listening to Lovesexy a lot lately, and I just dig this era and its sound much more than the W&L psychedelia stuff that simply got too much space on Parade.

Parade is certainly a strong album, but it's a bit overlong and faulters in the middle, where a couple of songs simply go on a bit too long. Lovesexy really only has one lull (the ludicrous final minute or so of Anna Stesia and Dance On in its entirety), but it picks itself back up again with the spectacular title track and holds on until the end.

It's not that I hate both records. I absolutely love Lovesexy because of the whole concept/vibe, but to really rate it as some of his greatest work it has too many flaws in terms of composition imo. I like Parade, but to have it as an absolute favourite it has too many weak songs imo. Out of all his 80s albums (except of the two "standards" PR and SOTT), I would rate ATWIAD higher than both Parade and Lovesexy.

This from someone who loves Emancipation. wacky

j/k wink

I hate Emancipation but LOVE Parade & Lovesexy--I'm guessing we probably have entirely different tastes in music.

I keep thinking that a 'semi-black' artist performing such an european sounding jazzy cut as "Do U lie", reflecting the atmosphere of Paris, is a proof that music is colourblind.

Look where we headed from there: conservative christians against fundamentalistic muslims? I mean, Prince was right on spot there, crossing every borders, rising above prejudices and stereotypes.

thumbs up!

Parade is crazy and sounds like nothing else Prince has done.

It's a little slice of something could never be sustained, and that is great pop music. (Same goes for Lovesexy, but for different reasons).

In the 80's Lovesexy was my all time fav Prince album!
I was blown away from the great sound, the grooves,guitars..man,never heard him kick-ass this way!!
And when Livesexy was broadcasted I knew I was right.

Parade is a great album but at the time I didn't play it that often as Lovesexy,
I was 18 and I wanted 2 party,U know..Parade was a bit 2 soft 4 me.
Liked Mountains,Girls&Boys,Christopher's Tracy's Prade a lot though.

Years later,I think Parade has aged better and I love the link with the movie,
it wasnt a succes but I love it.

Both are great,I'll put on Parade 2 ease my mind.
Lovesexy...put the volume on 10 and feel the funk!!!

It's kinda hard to choose between the two. I know I listen to "Parade" more often, probably cuz "Lovesexy"'s more "sonically demanding".
