i think it's about betrayal. about people close to prince abusing his trust.

me too. nod The thief betrayed Prince by taking or lying to a woman that was there to be with Prince.
The thief interrupted the process, constructed the road block and took the woman on a road away from Prince. whip Rape or no rape he's talking about a real thief who stole Prince's woman. pimp2

Actually, the 'thief' is the woman herself. It's not about someone 'stealing'
his woman away from him. It's about a woman who used him and said she loved him
when all the time she was just playing him.

Yes, and the object being stolen... his heart (but not in a good way).

One of my all time favorite Prince songs - but the acoustic version is truely legend - the most haunting vocal delivery i've ever heard. What year is this version from? He sounds shattered. It's like he locked himself in the toilet at paisley with nothing but a guitar and pure heartbroken emotions and let it all come out.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was around the time that Mayte hooked up with Tommy Lee. I idea of Tommy's huge mutton-gun drilling into wee Mayte would surely cause such a ghostly, hunted, heartbreaking vocal...

Is this the version on The Work Vol 3? If so, then I looked at the liner notes and it says recorded in 1990. Prince didn't know Mayte then, right?
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

hence the hissy fit at the end of the song!!

"U said u loved me!
U said I was your friend!
U were supposed to take care of me!
U lie! Love come (Lie!) in a hurry (Lie!)"
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!
