I never really got that out of the lyrics

No, it's about vaginas.
Prince was obsessed with vaginas at that point in his life. The temple represents both the girls' vagina and his anus. For example, when he says (in the extended version) that you lead him on, thinking you was moses, hearding sheep blindly through a fatansy. You did me wrong and everybody knows it... He's talking about, and talking out, of his anus. But when he says "my only friend is you.", he's saying his only friend is her vagina. The lyrics are very complicated, as Prince lyrics can get when he's trying to avoid the subject of Dihydrogenated monoxide--the usual elephant in the room of his songs, so to speak  | |

For instance, Thieves in the Temple would represent "bad thoughts" or "thoughts that might turn one away from God" such as jealousy, anger, despair (as in "U Said U loved me!"). These feelings are "tearing him apart, kicking him in the heart" and he is begging for "Love to come save him quickly" because he might lose himself if Love doesn't come. Prince often interchanged the word "Love" for "God" in many of his songs. | |

Oh man, I thought this song was as clear as day. It's about your woman cheating with another man. "thieves in the temple" Another man in your woman! And you trying to hold on to the relationship because you beleive in that love, hoping she'll choose your stronger love over his. That you are the best thing she'll ever find you're pissed because she's lied, that she's allowed "theives in her temple...but you're holding on becuase you are the best she'll ever find and she'll come back to you once she realizes this. This was the 1st Prince song I ever liked and fell in love with!
It was on a compilation tape I had called 'Hits '90', I think - and it stood out a MILE from Black Box and all the other acts. (Although I did like their version of 'Fantasy' and that song which sampled the 'I Dream Of Jeanie' theme tune ). I wasn't a fan at all but from there on, every time I read a music magazine or some reviews section, there'd always be some reference to Prince or the massive influence he'd had. He swooped on to my radar. And 4 years later, I got the 'Symbol' album and...  
SUCH a good song. And I can't think of a single track in his canon which sounds anything like it.  His vocals are so passionate, the 'Voices in the sky' section and that guitar solo...

One of my all time favorite Prince songs - but the acoustic version is truely legend - the most haunting vocal delivery i've ever heard. What year is this version from? He sounds shattered. It's like he locked himself in the toilet at paisley with nothing but a guitar and pure heartbroken emotions and let it all come out.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was around the time that Mayte hooked up with Tommy Lee. I idea of Tommy's huge mutton-gun drilling into wee Mayte would surely cause such a ghostly, hunted, heartbreaking vocal... | |
