The song Darling Nikki

I personally think this is a song that I can't compare 2 any other in P's illustrious career. It is the most shining example of the man's guitar playing and style. The entire riff (melody) is some sort of modal shifting with each strike of the strings. Someone versed in music theory help me here. Do U know what I'm saying. Every note following the next is a different key or at least some weird configuration of one key. This is something he always does on solos, but a whole song. It sounds like Beethoven or something Baroque.
Any opinions?

I have a particular "thing" for songs that start off kind of slow and mellow and then they reach a cresendo and burst into craziness. Love it. big grin

I love the drum tracking in the end vamp.
He is credited as playing all the instruments on Darling Nikki, so I like to picture him in the studio hammering away at the end of this song. Even more on the unreleased version!

His COLDEST song? Mmmm... I think I see what that means. There's no love in it at all.

But there's also something very hot about that coldness...

the extended booted version is INSANE!!! I really think he should left "Computer Blue AND Darling Nikki" the way they were orginally done in the studio. Damn..most all the songs from Purple Rain for that matter...

Yeah, and with this song you can picture everything that Prince is singing about, and can imagine someone dancing or little Nikki, (haha) doing the bump and grind moves that he says Nikki’s doing in the song, when he hear all those instruments playing. And his screams…oh my goodness, it's like you feel his pain and question also.

That's why I know that this song is a masterpiece, because despite its lyrics and what the song is about (I'm referring to my comments from another thread), the quality of the music really just hits as it tells the story.

You feel the sense of Urgency in his voice and his Anger. He is Angry and screaming at Nikki(Vanity/Appolonia) There is A Lot OF Passion in this song.. IT is INTENSE.

Really a prime example of Prince's unorthodox production style back then.
Is he playing live drums on the "wanna-grind-part"?

I always thought that whole song was live drums.
