Dirty Mind Vs Controversy: The Albums Which one would you pick over the other.
I often read that Controversy wasn't really much of a departure from Dirty Mind and so it often gets dimissed but I still think its a great album. Its like the bridge between DM and 1999. I find it hard to chose but I think Dirty Mind just edges it. I thought I'd see how they fair head to head Dirty Mind v Controversy: Controversy When U were Mine v Sexuality: When U were mine Do It All Night v Do Me Baby: Do Me Baby Gotta Broken Heart Again v Private Joy: Private Joy Uptown v Ronnie: Uptown Head v Lets Work: Head Sister v Annie Chritain: Annie Chritain Party UP v Jack U Off: Party Up So thats 4 each. | |

Theyre both supreme albums as they were groundbreaking, funny, skilled and dead funky as well as bring a real Prince agenda. Dirty Mind is loud and crude, whereas as Controversy is more grown up and polished sounding. Its his manifesto for real. I choose DM over Controversy as its MORE groundbreaking. Controvesry sounds alot like half Dm and half 1999, but Dirty Mind sounds nothing like Prince!!! and virtually provided the ideas for C.
Dirty mind vs/ Controversy - Dirty Mind, not as clever but so much more raw and vital sounding, his first truly great song about fucking. When U were mine vs Sexuality, Draw, the first track is a supreme ballad about a man who will take any amount of shit from his girl, not pure Prince which is why it can't trounce the latter which is pure manifesto, educate ur kids and there is hope for all he sang. Stand up organise. Do It all night vs Do Me Baby, wow battle of the sex here, Do it all night is supreme type funk and would trounce any other song in most case, but Do Me baby is like the best steamy ballad hes done, so we have a winner. Gotta broken heart again vs Private Joy, I love Gotta broken heart a lot its a sweep weepy ballad, but Private Joy just kicks asss, its fluffy and presents the true Prince, a control freak, not some po boy willing to be hurt by every insubstansial affair. Uptown vs Ronnie, no contest Uptown by a long shot, his best G rated funk, he makes the rules and he don care what yo think, Ronnie is right wing nonsense. Head vs Lets Work, very close, Lets work is a great song and very tight funk strut, but Head is like the funniest thing hes ever done, its so dirty yet sung so innocent, all falsetto! Sister vs Annie Christian, definitely opposites here, his most expicit song until sexy MF vs his most preachy and boring one. Listen motherfuckers weve chosen the one. Party Up vs Jack U off, Party Up wins, a preachy but funky song, it carries on the themes of Uptown too. Jack U off whilst funky and enjoyable is pure kiddie soft porn. So thats 5½ songs to Dirty Mind and 2½ to Controversy. Still both are numbers 3 and 6 on my chart, so I don't agree Controversy is better than its predecessor, but still is bloody good anyway. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince | |

Annie Christian barely beats it though. And Do Me, Baby? Classic Classic Classic. He ain't do no "mock fucking" in any of them joints on Dirty Mind. I love it. For me, Controversy is a huge departure from Dirty Mind. a lot of what is in Controversy (as far as the sound) seems like the infant stage of what was his "signature sound (minneapolis sound)" in the '80s and the sound of the 2 LPs that followed it. I can't say that about any of the songs on Dirty Mind. | |

Dirty Mind...it's one of the few albums that I listen to without skipping a track. As DirkFunk said, there's no filler. I like Controversy too, but for me there's really no contest between the two...Dirty Mind all the way.

I choose Head, because I've always loved that song and because Let's Work is not the 12" version. If it was Head v. Let's Work 12" I wouldn't be able to choose... Dirty Mind is easily his weakest album loaded with filler tracks. Controversy was a vast improvement. On a song by song basis "Sexuality" crushes "When U Were Mine."
