My UNFINISHED PRINCE TOP 107 FAV. Songs list W/ commentary

i did this months ago to commemorate my 1 year anniversary as a prince fan. i never finished the list, it was too damn hard!
months later ive heard a couplah hundred new {well old} songs and bootlegs, i might finish and reconfigure, but this is what i had so far. Some of yall gonna rip me to shreds, but i was a noobie... hell, i still might be. Heres my unfished list with my thoughts on each particular song
holla back
{copy and pasted from a word document}

107. I Wanna Be Your Lover

I remember this song quite a lot. One of the main reasons was that this was one of the few prince songs KUBE 93 in Seattle played in heavy rotation {the other songs are on this list for this very reason}. I really like this song because is very slick, very polished. Hard to believe someone so young could pull this off by themselves. No wonder why this one is a classic. But being that it is indeed a classic- it got over exposed…At least to me.

106. Gangster Glam

I first heard this song when I first saw the video at housequake forum. The video is hilarious {not for the good reasons} but the song it self is okay. Its one of those songs that you don’t like as a whole but one part grabs you. That part would be the chorus with prince singing the title over some nice chords. I like it cuz it kind of reminds me of MJ’s DON’T STOP TILL YOU GET ENOUGH. Tony is too close to the mic for me, but its aight for it being from 1991.

105. Venus De Milo

It’s a real cool piece although I’m not that big on instrumental music. The first time it caught my ear was when he played it during the piano medley on LOVESEXY concert. The way the audience screams for it and the melody echos throughout the whole stadium- priceless! This is one of the many prince songs on the list where I prefer the live versions over the studio version.

104. Slow Love

The album version is so damn boring . The movie/live version brought it to life {along with a nother song, im pretty sure yall know which one it is} The performance of the song got me , not the song it self. It’s a little nice song, but not too memorable on its own. I just like picturing that performance in my head. So full O that “stuff” Its great. The album version is long too. Dammit Prince!

103. Do Me BABY

I have heard the covers and the sampled versions of this song, but I never heard the original till I heard the hits. Being the first version I heard was by whats her name {?} It did kinda throw me off. But what caught me most was the music. It was just plain ass pretty. What also stuck me was it didn’t sound like it was made in 80-81. 1985 maybe, but not 1981. It’s a cool song in my opinion- but I rarely play it but the first few seconds of it.

102.Wedding Feast

I notice this song gets dogged a lot around the fan community. Trust me I understand. But what I like about this song the first 30 seconds. The singer’s voice is very slick and smooth, I like it very much. Then the opera comes and I really don’t know what the hell to think about that! But the first seconds are cool to listen to from time to time.
Who is singing this?

101. Controversy

This is another prince classic that was played on KUBE 93 so I remember this one well. It’s a great song with a memorable synth line but for some reason I cant really get passed the first 2 minutes. I can honestly say I never heard the ending of it. Also this song has been a little over exposed {if the played it everrday during the mid 90s , imagined how much the played it in ’81?} But nonetheless, a classic.

100. For You

Yeah, yo boy is a sucker for nice harmony and cheesy lyrics. Lil Prince, 19, singin his little heart out. For many, this would be the first thing they heard utter out of his mouth. He hasn’t really sang so soft and smooth and so “Debarge-ish” since that album {which may be a good thing?!} but its very nice. Also the nice touch is the backwards intro to the –intro. Many artist would have introductory songs on their albums, but I think this track is along the best.
And its very short- that’s always a plus!

99. Feel U Up

Total 80’s club jam here. I wonder why this one never became a classic? Last year when I first got hold of the HITS set, this song didn’t really hold me. But once I “got” the whole Camille thing I automatically dug the song even more. {PRINCE+SPED UP VOICE= FUNK!} What got me with the song was him checking if the girl understood his “goals” with her with the constant “okay?!” and “what do you say?!” . Funny!
I have yet to hear the extended version. Would be nice……

98. Starfish and Coffee

Couldn’t been no more than 10 when I saw prince do this song in January 1998 on the muppets show. This song reached out to me the most. I really didn’t understand what the song was about then { a special child} I just thought it was about a girl who was just different {it should be seen that way anyway} Imagine my shock when I found out the song was made in 1986? Again perfect example of prince being ahead of his time. But for whatever the reason- I can never remember the 3rd verse.

97. Sexy MF

I was starting kindergarten when I first heard this jam but for some reason I was more intrigued by the “mf” than the actually music. Musically its real cool, funky and smooth all at the same time. The chant at the end { you know the one} has to be one of the funniest things I ever heard. They chant it with so much conviction. AMAZING!
P.S. the rapping is a little extra though.

96. Bob George

WTF?! That was my initial reaction. But it’s a pretty damn funny and clever song. The violence is a little extreme, but it happens everyday. But i have to side with home dude on this one. A simple beat with prince’s voice digitally altered is enough to make me interested. Its funny to listen to, even funnier to rap my self { I don’t rap, hehehe} Prince’s humor is on point on this one- a point many people won’t appreciate.
SAD.

95. Billy Jack Bitch

Ouch! Prince is wounded and like a deer shot- he wonders why he deserves to be shot the way he was. This song is very sad to me because prince is playing victim- and not to a woman he had sex with. Its very whiny- MICHAEL JACKSON AGAIN! But I love it- its like SCREAM #2. What I like most his how he sings the verses and the backing vox repeats his every line. A very great song in my opinion. 1995 to the inth degree. ….whoa, its also 95 on my list! DIDN’T PLAN THAT ONE!

94. Dance On

One of the most amazing drumming I heard on a track. I like when prince attempts to use the band to record with him. The vocals of them works well on here {even LEVI- “Get off me punk, U aint sexy!”} Boni makes any song a joy, I love her as a vocalist and she seemed like a really cool person. Lovesexy as a whole is an awesome ass album. Its actually the only cd I legitimately bought of P’s so far. Thru ebay- I aint walkin into a store and pick this one up, NO DAMN WAY!

93. I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man

Prince knows whats an ear catching guitar hook, and this song is no different. The guitar use during the chorus is amazing, it soars over the song. This is also one of the songs where I prefer a live version {SOTT movie} over the original. What sealed the deal for me was Sheila BANGING on the drums and Boni tickling the keys during the opening of the song. AMAZING!
The Song itself is cool and very high school-ish to me. And yeah P, it DOES remind me of high school..if I attended in 87, but I was a fetus.

92. It

It’s so simple but genius at the same time. It does run a little long though {with a lot of his songs} but I just blame it on my attention span{ or lack thereof} I think the element prince shines in most is when he uses less instruments and tracks to get his point across. It works so well here. His voice shows complete desperation and vulnerability. Its top notch.
MJ heads- this song reminds me of Captain Eo’s “WE ARE HERE TO CHANGE THE WORLD”

91. 1999

{Promise you I didn’t plan this one either!} I have the tendency to place more famous song lower{or higher} on my list because of my own ways I choose to not like songs everyone else likes. That’s just me- im cool with that. This song is NO DOUBT a classic. But I know it has run its course with everyone and they momma. The way the vocals are split up is an excellent touch to the song, but thank god the song is DONE.

90. Thieves in the Temple

This song is so haunting and touching and I really don’t know why. I would like to know what made prince write a song like this but who knows it could be a large amount of reasons. I like when prince shows his vulnerability and this song is an awesome showcase. But again I can’t remember the last couple of minutes of it for some reason. And that says what? I don’t however feel the song is an awesome way to introduce himself to the 90’s.
P.s. the video is totally MJ aight?!

89. Ronnie, Talk To Russia

WHO THE F*CK IS RONNIE? That’s what I was thinking but then when I was told that it was about Reagan it all made sense. Prince was worried about the state of the world and prince was warning dude to get everything cleared up before its too late. I like the urgency and desperation in the song. ANOTHER example of a song being short and awesome. For a lot of people the screams and the bomb sound effects might be a lot. But I understand that it was ment to represent chaos, and that’s the state the world’s in!

88. Two Nigs United For West Compton {The first minute anyways}

PRINCE is a damn comedic genius! This has to be one of the funniest moments on wax. Him and cat, Plus him, him, him, him and etc. all talking in a “club” like atmosphere. Its just hilarious to hear them talking crap about nothin’. The instrumental jam was, for me, too much, too fast, for too damn long. It’s not really organized to my ear. But then again, prince makes music in his sleep.
P.S. who the hell is FRANKIE? And why he gotta be a BITCH?

87. 1+1+1 is 3

To hear something coming from prince so funky, so gritty, so- 1983 is damn amazing to me. From an album many say is RELIGIONX10 its really funky. Their may be a little religious message in the song but, it doesn’t faze me- im a PK. I felt the whole song up until the whole marching thing then I get lost. But an awesome attempt though. This is the kind of music prince is famous for. This is his signature, I would love to hear more of this typa funk in the future.

86. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

I remember this song cuz BET played this video and lovesign all the time in the summer of 1994. It’s a nice little song I think and shows his falsetto range {and his baritone} very nicely. But sometimes it could be too much at one time so again, I rarely listen to this song. If one song summed up the 90’s prince {not PHYSICALLY,lol, but MUSICALLY} I’d say this is it. Makes my damn teeth rotten.

85. Musicology

One of my major regrets in my young life is that if I got into prince months earlier I could have got into the whole “Musicology” thing. I was too late, missed the concert in Atlanta. So in essence, whatever era which is to begin, would be my first one to experience as a fan. Count on P to, as soon as I, a MJ fan, crosses over, he decides to disappear! Damn, that’s fair.
Anyway the song itself, is a great song. But what I could sense from this song and essentially the whole project was that he was trying too hard to”fit”in. TO WHAT? I don’t know, but he was really to “eager” to showcase he’s funky. Dah well. The “DON’T YOU TOUCH MY STEREO-“ part is priceless in itself. The song just plain makes you feel good. We don’t have a lot of those.
Makes me wish I was born 30 years earlier.

84. Strange Relationship

It’s a nice little ditty and I like the hook and the feel of the whole song. I am now understanding that song cuz I hate and love my girl so much all at the same time…Sad, but that’s life! Again the sped up voice is featured here and that is an automatic plus for me anyway. It makes the song so much better. I see it as the regular “adult/reasonable” prince singing under the sped up “childish/bratty” voice expressing their views at the same time.
Interesting take. I feel it’s a tad too long, 3rd verse not really needed, but cool with me!

83. Superfunkycalifragisexy

The album version is cool but the Live version is BETTER! I like the way Sheila changed the beat, it fits the song entirely better. My favorite part of the whole song is the bridge . I like the melody of it, its very… sesame street-ish.The rap is very cool on this. Something funny I found is that prince is a good rapper when he isn’t trying, but when he was actually trying {1990-} it didn’t feel right. But I dig this one though.

Whats squirrels meat?

82. Girls and Boys

PRINCE+PARIS= SOPHUNK {sophisticated funk} I came up to that equation listening to the PARADE album. This album has to be in my top 3 of P.Rev. Girls and Boys is a very fun track and has to be the first time prince spit a rhyme on wax..A nice one at that! The beat is driving and the girls singing in the famous monotone way he always has them sing in. The video was cool- but could someone explain “……BOO!” I still don’t get it to this day.

81. Cream

The re-introduction of Prince to popularity was fueled by this song. I can’t lie, its totally 50’s rock and roll, but slower, and bluesier. But the only thing that makes me grit my teeth in disgust is the stupid “Look up in the air/ Its your guitar” line. I HATE that line, it throws off the whole song. I hope there is a deep underlying message in it some where. That one line alone kept this song from being in my top 40. Too bad…too bad about it-dah!

80. What Do U Want Me 2 Do

A kick ass song I don’t hear a lot about from fans but it is certainly one of my favs. Its very smooth- but a little sharp on the the speakers, but the melody is very , very smooth. The lyrics are a little annoying, they coulda been better. But musically, as a whole, it’s a very nice summer time song. WouldA dug seeing a video to this. Maybe in a nice tropical area somewhere.

79. Hot Thing

Has to be one of the single most mainstream- lazy tunes of prince’s I’ve ever heard. BUT IT’S A COOL SONG. This is one of many songs I like based on its performances, not the song itself. But I always dug that “smiiilllee” part. A cool little 80’s ditty for sure, prolly a porno soundtrack reject {im sorry but its in my head everytime I hear it!} A nice song I say that prince recorded in his sleep- no biggie.

p.s. CAT IS HAWWWWWT!

78. I Feel For You

I knew of Chaka’s version first, but this one is equally as good.

You've got more energy than I have. Why 107? are they in order? BTW can't agree with on "Hot Thing". As for "squirrel meat"...i dunno what that is.....I know "chicken grease" is a certain type of funky guitar..unless "squirrel meat" its just the flesh from a departed squirrel, unlikely since P is a vegetarian. One of the great mysteries of our time.
