Some people up in here are delusional over Prince. He's a musician, that's it. He's not a God, he's a guy who is good at what he does. He's a shitty live speaker, he is flawed in that he likes to play mind games with people(I've read this in biographies about him from people who know him), and he likes to represent himself as a spiritual person, although that apparently changes depending on the day of the week(also written by a guy who worked with him) He keeps his private life private because he doesn't want the public to know he is flawed. When he has discarded people in his past, he has walked by them as if he never knew them, and he himself has said, if I'm not happy with something, then I put it out of my mind, and it just goes away. That sounds like someone who runs from situations and is clearly not living in reality. Prince's battle with labels was for HIMSELF, not for other musicians. It was his own ego. Warner was quoted as saying that he had borrowed, and owed tens of millions of dollars of dollars from them throughout his career, and that he could get away with anything, because they believed in his talent. He was a coddled child. A 17 year old boy who was given ALOT, way too early...and everybody sucked up to him, and gave him everything he wanted...He's a mixed up person people...That is why he changes his mind constantly. Warner also said that he was making all kinds of irrational decisions throughout his career, and they were glad to be done with him...They wanted out as much as he did...but of course, they still kept the masters...unfortunately, Prince didn't beef about this until years later, after he had all the money and fame he wanted. He started battling them when his sales were down. Even Clive Davis said he was difficult to work with, and that was just a few years ago...and when Rave bombed, he blamed everyone else. That album was good, but an obvious and blatant attempt at a comeback commercially...didn't happen...So REMEMBER, he is a great musician, and that's ALL. Stop being brainwashed...and the Rainbow children album is just not good. Not compared to stuff he's done in the past. He's still a great live performer, but his glory days are OVER.

In a way it sounds like you're contradicting yourself because everything you mentioned above has nothing to do with his music, it's more on a personal level and then at the end you say, "So REMEMBER, he is a great musician"...well that's exactly what we were saying, one of the best in our book.

But apparently, not here with us. With the R&B and hip-hop charts probably, but not with us.

O.K., I've been doing music professionally for 15 yrs in one form or another, and even given all Prince's 'personal issues', the guy still continues to amaze with his craftmanship. That's all that matters to me as a performer- he may not be as mindblowingly original as he was up to 199?, but there's enough still there to inspire or re-inspire.

Greatest all-round ? Maybe, but there's a few around on independent or jazz 'tips'/ labels who have never benefitted from Prince's 'popularity'. Still, it's always worth listening to his new stuff, even if some of it doesn't stick.

You say all this like it's a complete revelation to people. It has nothing to do with the question that was asked. Sounds more like your issues with him instead of anything musically related.

Although Prince kicks some major major ass, he is certainly not the greatest all around musician in the world. Such a claim is ridiculous and utterly ignorant.

Check out this thread for some good discussion related to the topic at hand:
