I guess a 72% increase is very good, but this doesn't seem like the huge spike in sales that some people predicted.

Thanks for posting....
I`m a little dissapointed...only #79?
Where is the new single fury or lolita?
Why is universal not trying to get them added to radio playlists?
Any idea?

Hilarious. It didn't do much of shit for the album.

It moved up 35 spots and increased sales by 5600 copies. Hardly nothing. The alternative would have been for the album to slide 20 or 30 spots and lose 2 or 3 k in sales.

A friend of mine went looking for the album and couldn't find it. She only went to a couple of places, but it was sold out.
And to state the obvious, if it was on iTunes it would have done even better.
The REAL question will be if AI helped 3121 with radio airplay. Cause without that, it will continue to slide down the chart.

Well considering that radio hasn't played it so far...

Well, it's only been a week after the performance. I didn't think it would happen that quickly. Not that I'm really expecting anything from radio.

I hate to break this to you. But this is chicken feed in the majors. You know what would happen if you walked in a office after American Idol and said "Guess what we moved up to 79. We are still in the game." You would be looked at and then promptly escorted out of the office and handed a box to clean out your desk.

This is a new game. This isn't 1980. The stakes are higher and investors want the highest volume of sales moved per week, period. And I can assure you no one is handing noise makers to anyone in the company over this move. You know why?
Fury isn't a hit single and neither is Lolita. No one gets excited over losing/gaining a few thousand with a high profile release. Because everyday money is on the table that's being spent.

Prince messed up by performing Satisfied and Lolita instead of Fury.
And Universal is going to axe this project right on top of it's head.
And Good Morning America isnt going to make a difference. You need a hit single and there isn't one. And that's why this project is approaching the flatline.
As predicted by many a orger.

And if Amazon mattered then every record company would be jumping for joy. But it doesn't. They spent a small mint on this record. No one gives a shit about +5600 sales because it's a High stakes game and that is the craps table. It is chump change. For An indie? Good. For a major after Idol? Nothing to puff your chest out about.

Look at the chart, Huey Lewis Greatest Hits is ahead of an American Idol closer. Sorry but it speaks for itself.

Also, just a sidenote.
On iTunes, in the RnB album chart, The Hits is #12, Black Sweat/BL&B is #15 and The Early Years is #31.
But on the homepage, Prince is nowhere to be found.
I guess AI really had an effect on the handful of blacks that were watching. lol

Is this where Huey Lewis debuted? Prince debuted at #1 and without AI. Or a hit single.
You act like Prince is just starting out. He's a legend and it ain't like it's make or break time in his career.
And in 20 years, will any of the current chart toppers be able to sell out two club shows with $300.00 per head ticket prices? Taylor Hicks? Kelly Clarkson? I doubt it.

Well maybe they should they can't get the songs on the radio. So they messed up big time. P could have gone out and promoted more but people still buy music based off of what they hear on the radio.

The only loss money wise on this project for Universal would be the marketing cost and I really did not see how the spent a mint on the marketing.

Great record fucked up marketing. All very typical for the music industry these days.

I gotta say, I completely agree with you. I'm not a hater by any means (never have been) but this is going to go one of two ways. The more likely is that Prince will say "You forced me onto a crap show like American Idol to promote this album and it did jack. I'm done working for you" (similar to what he did with Arista and Rave). Or, Universal will say "We can't even get a week of good sales after 35 million people see him on TV. We're done."

Either way, I think we've seen the end of 3121 promotions and possible the Tamar solo album...

this is another example of why prince is a difficult artist to put under your label. he isn't doing promotional work, he isn't consistant with the songs he does perform, he came off like an immature asshole on american idol when he could have used the opportunity to really milk some success. in addition to all of this, he is more concerned with Tamar than his own record. how happy can the record company be when they banked on prince selling prince and instead he's selling some nobody's work that the public is just not interested in.

if prince wants to be an indie artist, more power to him. but if he wants to play in the big leagues he's got to learn its their rules or no game. obviously he's so stuck in his own world of asskissers that he really thinks he's still a force in the industry. hopefully - though i doubt it - this will knock some sense into that thick skull of his.

Prince no force in the music biz?
Not doing promotion?
The best time was reserved for Prince on AI...the part with the biggest
tv audience before the results anouncement! 43 million viewers in the US!
Prince performs 10 min during the BRITs!
He always gets the best possibilities...
It was typically Prince to perform another song from 3121, not his current single...He doesn´t follow any rules, we should accept it...
Universal didn`t even serve the radio stations in the us with fury, yet.
Don`t know why and which fault it is...
He is selling records..enough for a #1 album in the US and Top ten album worlwide, but without a real big hitsingle, it seems more is not possible.
Radio doesn´t play his songs anymore...that is a miracle to me...
And don`t tell me the songs are to bad for radio biggrin

nope he didnt , the vast majority of people who saw American Idol saw Prince come on , perform 2 songs excellently and leave . They didnt read multiple
articles giving conflicting accounts on Prince turning up 5 mins before time / 15 minutes before time / not speaking to the contestants / speaking to the contestants nor would they care to read them .To the general public as a whole Prince's appearance on AI was a fine showing , dont assume that the whole world pores over every news article on Prince and judges him accordingly after his TV appearance , thats just us freaks online doing that . Lines like "Prince
came off like an asshole " are just plain inaccurate if youre only exposure to Prince's AI showing was what you saw on TV .

The album will sell more copies if he releases it on iTunes. It's funny that he will get a lifetime Webby award when his latest album is not available for download.

He came off as an asshole to who? You, Simon Cowell and a few on this fansite? Interesting you would say that because the reviews on the AI website was OVERWHELMINGLY positive. Go figure.

Also how do you know that the public is not interested in Tamar when her album has not even been released yet and almost EVERY review from the live shows has been very good. It's one thing if you're not feeling her but to speak for the public? C'mon now rolleyes

No offense but if I was Prince I would laugh at your last paragraph because I think you're forgetting that Universal signed a deal with Prince, as Prince wanted it, so why would Prince be playing their game? Prince has a helluva ego and Universal knew what they were getting into when they signed the dotted line. And as far as Prince thinking he's a force in the industry, personally I don't think Prince cares. Besides, just two years ago he was selling out large arenas and had the most successful tour that year, so I'm sure he still means something.

I cut and paste my post from the "Simon Cowell blast Prince" thread because I think it fits with this topic:

All this shit about Prince being an asshole on AI is just tired as fuck. First off, Prince spoke to the contestants before the performance and the executive producer confirmed this. How is this being a dick? Second, Simon and the judges had NO CLUE that Prince was going to be on the show. Just a few people knew, including Ryan Seacrest cause he had to introduce him (or not introduce him). Sounds like Simon's jealous cause he had no control over him as if he was some contestant. He'd better recognize!

Plus, the majority of y'all have been fans of Prince for more than a couple of years at this point. DON'T Y'ALL KNOW WHO YOU'VE BEEN DEALING WITH ALL THESE YEARS??? Prince, for better or worst, is going to do what HE wants to do and if you don't know this by now then you never will. He may do things that are real arrogant and such but that's Prince for you. If you've dealt with it this long, then you might as well deal with it now cause it not going to stop anytime soon, unless it's just too much for you. Besides, that was tame compared to what he's done in the past. For example, the We Are The World performance at the AMA's in 95. I'm just shocked by all the shock over this. It's just business as usual. Plus, I don't think Prince is done with this project so don't be shocked if more weird stuff comes our way. Just a fair warning.

Wow so if only AI viewer purchased the album this week, it would be about 1 in every 3,308!! If 45,000,000 viewers tuned in!

Ok, the performance was not that bad, I hear good things from many people who are not P fans. Somethings is totally messed up in the distribution.

I don't really care for the new album and generally I love almost every P release but it ain't that bad! Some heads should roll..

remember that prince is far more prolific than almost any other major act...almost every one of his albums since the early 80s have sold at least a million copies worldwide(apart from his jazz tinged albums and npg projects) and normally sells 2 or 3 million worldwide....at the moment, 3121 has sold nearly 1/2 million copies in the us and about the same in the rest of the world...not bad for a guy who has been releasing music every year for the almost 30 odd years....
