Syd Barrett (1946-2006). Any influences/similarities in Prince's work? With the recent passing of Syd Barrett (rest in peace), I was wondering if anyone here thinks that Prince was ever influenced by the work of Syd or Pink Floyd? I know a lot of people often refer to "Around the World in a Day" as being somewhat of a "psychedelic" album. I think that album is more psychedelic by way of the Beatles, but I'm kind of at a loss to name any songs of Prince that are Pink Floyd-like, or are dark and haunting acoustic solo stuff like Syd's later work. Anyone think of any Prince songs off the top of their head that are Syd/Pink Floyd sounding?
Also, anyone know if Prince has ever said anything about Syd or Pink Floyd's music before? Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Thanks for your music Syd, you won't be forgotten.

Strange that both artists are always credited by the media as being 'reclusive'. How someone who does TV shows and world tours and private parties can be called 'reclusive' when you compare them to a true recluse like Syd, I really don't know...

I used to hang out with probably the biggest Pink Floyd fan/fam (lol)
in the country here and he played me loads of their stuff but he said that there was little to none influence on prince's music as far as he could judge (and yes, i played him most stuff including outtakes and weird shit like others here with us/crystal ball etc etc). and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

It's funny you mention Crystal Ball because that's really the only one I could think of, the reason being because the song uses a wide variety of sound effects. Musically it is not very similar to Pink Floyd, but all of the different sounds used and the length of the song are similar to some of Pink Floyd's tendencies.

to be honest i doubt Prince would ever have known Syd Barret existed.
ATWIAD is very Beatleish, the only song that i ever thought Prince was sounding like Pink Floyd was The Sensual Everafter. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Let's see...waster who did not much of musical worth and took too many drugs which fucked him up...he's more like Pete Doherty.
Or even Syd Little (UK peeps will only get this one).
