When I was watching AI and heard Lolita starting to play, I couldn't believe my ears. I tried, throughout his performance, to enjoy seeing and hearing him live; but when it comes down to it I just had to admit that he had makeup caked all over his face, he sounded out of breath (I guess now that I read that he showed up at the last minute, that I can understand that part) and the twins were horrible! They never would have made it out of AI auditions. I was very disappointed--still living it down. After reading the rest of the posts I was beginning to think that I must be crazy because most everyone else seemed to have loved his performance. Thank God that there are others who saw the same show that I did. I agree that it wasn't a great performance, though I thought his vocals were quite good. The main problem for me, apart from the hideous make up job, was that the songs he performed just ain't very interesting....that goes for all of 3121. I don't care about him "selling out" on AI etc., he's a commercial artist, but knowing what he is capable of, performancewise, its disappointing when he doesn't knock your socks off. The truth is he's nearly 50 now so he can't execute all the cool dance moves he used to, he can't shock the crowd with explicit lyrics or assless pants. So the only way for him to thrill an audience is with songs and musicianship that live up to his status as a music legend, and cutesy throwaway pop tunes like "Lolita" just don't cut it....anyone could have written it.
