Can't see why Prince shouldn't appear. Just because the Grammys are all about Black Eyed Peas, U2, and Beyonce now does that mean Yo Yo Ma shouldn't appear and remind people that there is other music out there?
Sure, Prince could stick to some more obscure artsy appearances, like PBS or something, but I like that he's trying to keep some artistic integrity in the mainstream. Lolita might not be Bitches Brew, true, but let's see one of the "Idols" do an entire album virtually by themselves. I'm just glad he didn't do Let's Go Crazy & Purple Rain My Legacy

Gosh, looking at the video you-know-where, it sounded he was at the final show, just when the tension was building up. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE WATCHING THIS SHOW? Probably millions.
What a smart promotional move, heads up to Prince and Universal. And what a smart choice of songs - Lolita with its 80s feel, very mass-/radio-friendly, and Satisfied, good for the urban / AC crowd. And did he look nice or what! Not your average 47 year old rock-star. Brilliant!!!! I don't care if people snub at the audience of AI, he just did his thing, and I thought it was great. Much better getting a massive audience in one go then doing all the silly interviews where it is always the same kind of questions... R-e-s-p-e-c-t to whoever made this and had it kept quiet for so long

Ryan Seacrest said he wasnt in the building during the commercial break.
He said Prince was there for an estimated 5 1/2 minutes He came,he performed then he left. Smart man...no way would I sit backstage and wait through all of that other stuff. "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

Prince rocked it on AI last night. I almost missed it because my t.v. was on mute lol. I like his hair the way he had it too. And those twins suck...

Wow, talked to my friend on the phone today and she watched AI last night. She doesn't really care for AI much but she watches occasionally, and how can you help but know about it unless you live under a rock? Well she watched the finale last night like I said and we talked about Prince's performance today. Here's the thing; she's not a huge Prince fan either (I talk to her about him anyway though, lol) but she was talking to me about it and didn't have a problem at all, in fact she seemed rather enthusiastic. It just may have worked. HE'S COMING AGAIN

Mom (who's a devout "AI" watcher and Prince fan) screamed and drooled like a groupie with me the second she saw him appear on stage. Then, even my dad wanted to know after "AI" was over if there was "a Prince channel or something" he could watch, he was so delighted by the performance.

ABC News had a review of the whole finale which was generally negative. Here's the Prince related section:
"At one point, completely unannounced, Prince emerged for a two-song performance of material from his new album. The tunes were bad enough to ensure they will never hit the radio airwaves." Pretty funny... It was a pretty mediocre performance though, and the straw that breaks the camel's back as far as artistic integrity. We all knew Prince is a man of many contradictions, but never again can he go on about the evil record industry machine or real music/real musicians or any of that crap really. I mean, American Idol? WTF? It's like he's been on a two year campaign to show everyone that he is as much a vacant star hungry money hungry whore as any other musical act and this was the capper. Congratulations P, I believe you now!! No Sonny T?

Actually, Prince did say in past interviews that he sees the reason for younger unknown singers to have to rely on record companies.. his stance has long been against not owning your masters.

Cross post warning:::
A few people here claim that he "schooled those youngsters" on how it's done...Which part? The half naked bimbos, the pancake make up or the fucked up hair? Yes, he's "allowed" to do what he wants and some of us are "allowed" to not dig it. I never twitched over the symbol name, the assless pants, Larry Graham, "number one at the bank", or even New Power Soul...and some folks around here championing the AI appearance are/were all up in his shit about a lot of that stuff. So before y'all advise those of us that maybe found it just a teensy bit cheesy and rediculous that he involved himself in this circus, check yourselves and go back to measuring a man's art by its POPULARITY. Will 3121 mean more to you if it goes platinum?

THIS IS OFF-TOPIC, but one of my favorite Prince performances of all time is the one that he did on the RocknRoll Hall of Fame-the Tribute to George Harrison. I swear to you, I started crying. The look on George Harrison's son's face when Prince was playing the lead guitar for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps, " was just heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time. I remember when Prince was leaning back while playing the guitar, and George Harrison's son was in AWE. Yeah, Prince just walked in and took over that performance, but there was some real respect there for him to even participate. I think he played the hell out of that song for George's son and for George. Prince is an enigma, but I think that he has a kind heart and with age he is letting that show through.

Something similar happened to me. I gave a coopy of 3121 to a friend of mine and she rarely played it except for "Insense and Candles", but when I called her last night after AI, I heard "Lolita" blasting in the background. So I suppose it is working.

Read some of the hilliarious comments on this American Idol thread about people who didn't think the Prince performance was up to snuff. There is one person who says something about P.'s 15 minutes of fame being over. Um, I could have sworn it was a little longer than that.

OMG...that was a double-dose of awful-ness. When they sang "No you neva, eva eva. No you neva, eva eva. No you neva make a cheater out of me." I was like And before anyone runs up in here and plays Captain-Save-the-Twinz, I am not talking about their looks or their dancing. I am talking about their lack of singing ability. They would have been better off lipsyncing to a backing track. [Edited 5/26/06 7:01am]

FROM TMZ.COM--
PRINCE'S DRIVE-BY The performance by Prince was especially surprising, given that the singer reportedly hates the show. The funny moment here was when Ryan Seacrest was introducing Prince, who literally arrived, jumped out of the car, and made his way onstage in true diva fashion. Ryan was forced to kill time while Prince made his way to the stage, resulting in an intro that seemed to go on... and on... and on. Prince sang and was out the door and back on his way. ______________________________________________
