Dig it, Prince is just as much pop star as he is a musician. Prince has always had one heel planted in the obsure, avant garde, experiental, genius, artistic side of music. The other heel has usually been firmly rooted in the commercially driven, pop oriented, celebrity side of the music world.
Sometimes you get an obscure independent release like The Rainbow Children that appeals to mostly his hardcore fanbase. Other times you get 3121- which is for the masses. I like him both ways. I don't understand all the hostility when he leans more one way or the other. Sometimes we are lucky and we get the best of both worlds and we get an album like 1999 or Sign O' The Times. Prince is many things to many people. So what's the problem? Sometimes he's gonna play guitar, sometimes he's just gonna stand pretty and comb his hair. That's Prince-haven't you figured that out by now? "New Power slide...."

prince is a product and we are consumers.
when coke changed to new coke in the '80s, people quit drinking it. when they went back to classic coke, people started drinking it again. prince changes his formula a lot. sometimes i'll drink it, sometimes i won't.

Yes, we figured it out all by ourselves eons ago... why do you keep banging on about it? Maybe because this mentality so often displayed at the org: before May 24th- "3121 is too pop, not experimental enough. Anyways, he's not doing enough to promote it, blah, blah, blah." After may 24th- "Prince was on American Idol. What a sell out! I cannot believe he'd lower himself, blah, blah, blah...." [Edited 5/25/06 8:33am] "New Power slide...."

You are right, he doesn't need to play the guitar. Look at the whole Parade tour. He only ever picked it up for purple rain. A whole 2 hours with no guitar.
The difference is, the Parade tour was good. The performance on AI was tired and off key. I even heard a passer by say that it sounds like shit from 1981. .

If you think it was tired, that's you're opinion, but it wasn't off key. "Lolita" was played in a higher key than the album version, and Prince sang with it accordingly. This was done purposely to amp up the tempo of the tune. He's played songs in different keys from the album versions many times.

It was a fairly unprofessional vocal then. He didn't get on the mic in all the right places and he brough back his bad habit of dropping in and out of sticking to the original tune. .

I even heard a passer by say that it sounds like shit from 1981. Whoa! A passer by?!?!? Random no name people always know everything, don't they? Sure, Prince's little one off performance did not compare to a full blown tour from 1986. However, was is supposed to? Prince is still the best thing going and he showed it last night on American Idol. [Edited 5/25/06 9:00am] "New Power slide...."

speaketh the contrarian:
1. i didn't think the twins sounded as bad as people keep saying. 2. i didn't think prince's performance (as in his stage presence and moves) were all that. 3. i think his vocals were pretty amazing, even though he can work that mutant vocal range in his sleep, i'm sure. 4. why do prince's suits look more and more like the joker anymore?
