Performing on a dead ass show like "American Idol" was definately a sellout move. However, at least he didn't perform with any of the little overdramatic brats from the show which is more than I can say for him in 2004 when he actually performed with a shit hop bitch like Beyonce. I lost much respect for him after that so the performance last night didn't surprise me at all. I was only surprised that he didn't perform his sellout song "Incense and Candles". Then, it could have been a total sellout moment.

I'm going to try not to go on a full on rant here, because I've been a pretty devoted fan for a long time, and because I have more fun enjoying Prince than I do when I'm criticizing him, and most importantly - it's late and I have to work early in the morning, and I shouldn't even be awake right now.

BUT.

I'm scratching my head over the whole AI thing right now. I didn't see it tonight, because I was out with some dear friends, and if I were home, I wouldn't have seen it anyway because I don't watch AI and I didn't hear the rumors about Prince's appearance.

Let me say that regardless of how I feel about his decision to be on AI, I am FIENDING to see a clip! I'm not gonna fake otherwise, because you all know me better than that. lol

I can't help but feel like David Byrne in that old Talking Heads song: This is not my beautiful Prince! This is not my beautiful badass!

Of course, another lyric to that song is "same as it ever was, same as it ever was..." lol

But I digress.

Las Vegas? American Idol? Big splashy celebrity parties?

Well, okay. Good for him, I guess. But I feel like Prince has decided to take on the role of schmaltzy megacelebrity while at the same time wanting the rebellious cred of a righteous artist fighting for what is due him.

And I also feel like he's completely separated himself from the anally principled artist who challenged everyone from the industry to his own fans about how they thought about life, politics, fame, the music biz, God, and all the other subjects he's touched upon.

The Prince who spat out that beautiful rant in the middle of "Sexuality" and the spitfire who gave us "The Rainbow Children" and the One Nite Alone tour is all Howard Hughes pre-OCD breakdown with his parties and his entourage of nubile women dancers and his facade of a lifestyle.

It's like 1992 all over again, only not as cool.

Prince is always going to be a bad MF when you put a guitar in his hands. I can never refute that. But I miss the man who could both kick my ass with his musicianship and leave me walking away trying to process what the hell he was talking about, whether I agreed with it or not.

Of course, in his own famously roundabout way, this could be exactly what he's doing right now.

"...same as it ever was...same as it ever was..."

Anyway. Bedtime. I'll read the slings and arrows in the morning. lol

lol ta-ha! and well said. clapping I happen to agree with all of it.

Sell out? Hardly.

Like someone already said, it's just a phase, and he's done it before with Diamonds and Pearls and Musicology, just to name two. And, believe it or not, Prince NEEDS this. If he's going to get involved with a record company, and wants his shit out there AND wants people to actually buy it, then he has to be "willing to do the work."

IMO, it's one of the best commercial moves he's ever made in his entire career. In one single instance, his face and music were beamed out to millions and millions of viewers on the most popular show on television. I mean, everybody watches Idol, whether they love it or hate it. If you're trying to sell records, and Prince is definitely trying to sell records, then that was the best move he's made this year.

Bravo, Prince, two times. For doing the show, and for giving me a very unexpected surprise. He got me, because I did not see it coming.

More than most artists, Prince has put his artistic integrity and what he wants to do ahead of doing good business. However, calling performing on "American Idol" selling out is too much. Prince "selling out"? If that's what you wanna call it, it's nothing new. Past examples of Prince "selling out" :

-Purposely making his 2nd album more radio friendly and chart. Performing on American Bandstand, etc.

-Performing "partyup" on the popular late night TV show "Saturday Night Live."

-Making music videos like "little red corvette" for MTV.Again, performing songs on various TV shows like "Solid Gold".

-The biggest sell out of all, Purple rain. The whole project. The movie, the tie ins,the tv appearances, the videos, the more easily digestable music for the masses.

-Prince said he was not doing any videos to promote around the World in a day, then he releases "raspberry beret". What a sell out.

- Under the Cherry Moon, MTV, Sheridan Wyoming. Sellout anyone?

-Sign 'O' The Times at the MTV awards.

-Another huge sellout---BATMAN!!!

-The pimping of Diamonds and Pearls. Arsenio, Special Olympics, etc.

-The pimping of the prince album. Again, Arsenio, ABC TV special, etc.

-Signing a HUGE deal with Warner Bros.

-"The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" ad, the video, the TV appearances like World Music Awards.

-The Gold Experience/Exodus era promotion. Letterman, The AMA's, Vh1 appearances/Love 4 one another, lovseign on the Today show, traveling over seas as Tora Tora with the NPG. Again, a sell out even as a slave.

-Chaos and Disorder--letterman, Today show, video for "dinner w/Delores" etc.

-Emancipation: Various tv appearances, specials, interviews,etc-including Oprah, Rosie, Emancipation Celebration Simulcast, Muppets.

-New Power Soul: various TV appearances including BET video premiere, VIBE, Good Morning America, Tonight Show, etc.

-Rave promotion: Again, selling out all over TV. TRL, etc.

-Rainbow Children/ONA: Tonight Show,etc.

-Musicology: You were all there for this. Enough said.

See to be fair, Prince has been "selling out" for a long time now. That's his job. What do you want him to do? Not promote himself. It's his job to-

A. Make music
B. Promote/sell the music.

co-sign. i didn't watch the program last night (can't stand "reality programs" as it is), so i can't give my two cents' worth on how it was. what i can tell ya is my reactions to prince appearing on the show are a cross between "meh, it figures" (for the fact that he's the biggest walking contradiction on the friggin planet) and "i wanna pop 'im dead in the mouth!"

do i believe that he "sold out"? nawp.

I'm stunned at all of the vitriol aimed towards Prince performing on American Idol and being called a sellout. He did a musical performance; it's not like he decided to go on "The Surreal Life" or start his own E!/MTV/VH1 type reality show like "The Osbournes" or "Newlyweds" or even "Making The Band" to try to salvage his career. All of this hissing and hollering about being a sellout assumes that he has to live up to some purist standard about how performers are supposed to act. The problem is that standards always change. Back during Prince's most commerical heyday in the 1980s, the standard was to get on MTV, so he made a lot of videos and did his contests to perform in from of his biggest fans. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Prince railed against the record companies over royalties mostly because the CD blew up in popularity and was cheap for the record companies to produce, yet they could jack up the prices on CDs and make exorbitant windfall profits while still paying their artists measly royalty rates that were set when vinyl was still the main medium for listening to music. Now that mp3s and iPods are the rage and digital downloading are making huge record companies quickly obsolete, Prince's strategy has to change once aagin. That's the reason why he shows up on the Grammys with Beyonce, at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, on SNL and on American Idol. That's the same reason why Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder and Shakira also showed up on AI during the season, why Mariah Carey is suddenly pushing ringtones for a soda company, and why U2, Bruce Springsteen and other bands are actively pushing their songs to be played as background music on popular shows like The O.C., CSI, Cold Case, One Tree Hill, Grey's Anatomy, etc.

True, but those were the early years and Prince making a mark for himself. Prince is a music veteran now, he doesn't need to make a mark for himself anymore. So maybe he's trying to make a mark with today's audiences? That's what it looks like but my answer is "fuck them, they are the reason music is so fucked up today so don't help them grow".

In Prince's early years, there were tons of artists making great music so he had better make an appearance or two to get his name out there because there was plenty of other artists to choose from if he didn't. Those days are over though. Today, no one makes good music any more except Prince. If he gains today's crowd's acceptance, he may water his music down to appeal to their boring tastes. He's done it on certain songs already. I hope he never gets their acceptance. This ain't the early days anymore. Prince has an audience already. If newcomers (that like his type of music) want to join his fanbase, fine...but don't go looking to recruit newcomers that weren't interested in the first place because they will start influencing him to change for the worst.

alright...i made this comment on the initial ai sticky thread, but i feel that it would be better if it were repeated here on this one:

KrystleEyes said:

Sugarcoat it all you like, but at the end of the day it boils down to one thing and one thing only: desperate actions that reek of a shark-jumping sell-out.

prince appearing on a reality show = no.

prince seen hawking the newest barely edible concoction that mcdonald's/burger king/coke/pepsi/mr. clean/dow chemicals has conjured up = get the fonz on the phone.

it seems to me that some of ya'll have the line between "promotion" and "selling out" either mixed up or blurred. both kinna-sorta run along the same line, but are entirely different aspects of showbiz once you look at the two closely.

lol I heard about that. It just goes to show how standards have been drastically lowered over the years. A real artist like Prince needs to worry about his fans only and give the finger to a crowd that would be so tasteless as to even consider people like half dollar, 50 cent, or whoever the hell he is.

I loved that he went on AI for two reasons:

1. I get to see him perform

2. Millions of others get to see how great he is. Two women at my job mentioned how good he looked.

P.S. to Prince: Let the twins dance in the background, but DO NOT let them sing ever again!!!

I love this thread, even though I don't agree with most of it: I have always loved a true exchange of ideas by people. When I first started hanging out with Anx, one of the first conversations we had was on our varying opinions of Prince. I think Anx helped to rekindle my love of Prince music because I was lost in the whole contradiction thing.

I don't know: I don't understand how people can fault the guy for wanting to be on top of the world again. I don't understand how we all can fault him for 'selling out' when in practically every one of our lives, we sell a bit of our souls. Whether it be in our jobs or in our home situations. We expect things from this man that we don't expect from ourselves.

We criticize him for changing or contradicting himself when none of us are the same as we were twenty years ago. We don't afford him the luxury of being able to change his mind and do or believe something different. Are we pissed because he didn't tell us he was changing? Do we tell people when we do?

What would anyone here do to get their music heard? 3121 is a really good album to me and I wish that more people would hear it just so they could reach back and get other Prince albums so they could see why we feel the way we do.

American Idol? Is this not the man that is against record companies and how they handle artists??? The man who wrote "slave" on his face when he was the highest paid artist in history? the man who changed his name to a symbol so the record companies could not exploit his new works????

and he turns around and goes on the 1# show that makes kids sign up in these types contracts, contracts he's been fighting and warning people for over 15 years?

am I lost here? or did I miss something?????

I find it funny when P does weird stuff and doesn't promote his album everyone trips but when he promotes on tv the way he wants he is a sell out. Maybe he feels he was wrong with the whole "slave" thing and maybe he isn't against the man as he once was. If he was just starting out he would be signing a contract right now but he has exstablished his career and now sees the bigger picture and instead of going up against the companies he is trying to make it better for the new generation so they don't get taken to the cleaners.

your opinion and this is mine ..... I just think P is in a spot where no matter what he does he is going to get hated on. we should be happy he is still releasing albums and we get a chance to see him performe...one day all we will be talking about is "do you remember?"

i get your point, romera, and i think you worded it beautifully as always.

i'm trying to be very careful to avoid the word "sell-out", because i don't view it that way. if prince "sold out", it was back in 1978 when he signed his first contract with WB. or, more appropriately, when he renewed his contract with WB. prince has already done "selling out" into the ground, for better or for worse. i'm not even concerned about that.

my thing is, i just can't get with what prince's public persona is right now. i'm not into the whole vegas asthetic. i'm not into american idol. i'm not into the cult of celebrity. these are things that define prince in the here and now, and i'm not interested. it's not what i signed on for when i heard "let's go crazy" for the first time and got my mind blown. up till now, it's been a little bit more challenging than vegas and ryan seacrest, even if prince HAS had his "wow, that's dumb" moments over the years.

i'm all for prince taking risks and making big changes and seeing where his journey takes him next...but if i don't like a certain part of the journey, i reserve the right to get off the bus and meet you all later. lol

So let me get this straight, If Prince does very little to market 3121, he doesn't know what he is doing? If he shows up on AI and kicks some ass, he is a sell out?

So let me get this straight, If Prince does very little to market 3121, he doesn't know what he is doing? If he shows up on AI and kicks some ass, he is a sell out?

You people are CLUELESS and that's why Prince does shit HIS way.

actually, i can't help but wonder if last night's appearance was out of obligation to universal.

i get your point, romera, and i think you worded it beautifully as always.

i'm trying to be very careful to avoid the word "sell-out", because i don't view it that way. if prince "sold out", it was back in 1978 when he signed his first contract with WB. or, more appropriately, when he renewed his contract with WB. prince has already done "selling out" into the ground, for better or for worse. i'm not even concerned about that.

my thing is, i just can't get with what prince's public persona is right now. i'm not into the whole vegas asthetic. i'm not into american idol. i'm not into the cult of celebrity. these are things that define prince in the here and now, and i'm not interested. it's not what i signed on for when i heard "let's go crazy" for the first time and got my mind blown. up till now, it's been a little bit more challenging than vegas and ryan seacrest, even if prince HAS had his "wow, that's dumb" moments over the years.

i'm all for prince taking risks and making big changes and seeing where his journey takes him next...but if i don't like a certain part of the journey, i reserve the right to get off the bus and meet you all later. lol
And this is what I dig about you most. You've had your say, you said it respectfully and you are not acting as if Prince fucked you and didn't call you the next day.

We'll be waiting for you in the'later'. cool
