Power Fantastic meaning

This is such a deep spiritual song. It also one of my favorites. Is it just a sexual song or do ya'll see a deeper message?

The song is a spiritual song and I think that it means something along the lines of the power of love/God enveloping you.

In the liner notes to the HIts, it was a "Sunday song" much like Sign of the Times
"Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

The really tasty instrumental intro is missing from "The Hits" version. Grrr...

The lyrics are so picturesque....

I usually listen to this when I am in one of my more reflective moods.

sometimes people have experiences while they are asleep or on their way to sleep when the Holy Spirit comes and talks to them and tells them things about themselves or tells them things they should do or reveals something about their future. Sometimes a person who has these experiences may have trouble being sure that is is the Holy Spirit and not the devil (life or doom? ). didn't he say something about God talking to him before? when was that song written? '85?

Late at night
when the world is sleeping
you are frightened
cuz the power's creeping
in your room
there's something you're afraid of
life or doom
is what this feeling's made of
power fantastic
is in your life at last and
you're a little aprehensive
cuz what it is
is what you want
and need

man, i think this might be my favorite prince song ever. we can't really have these kinds of discussions about his later work.

The song is about the same thing he sings about today in :"the word"

the power of god and his word!
"what is this new exortation that I just cant explain? What are these
new inspirations, running thru my brain?"....

both songs are spiritual in nature,,.

"Really tasty"? Uhh, it sounds like they're just tuning their instruments. Not exactly awe-inspiring.

yeah, i see what you mean but still it's somehow not the same. no one would ask about whether or not 'the word' has sexual meaning. 'power fantastic' is sexy.

couldn't disagree more! it is a FANTASTIC intro. dislocated, loose, jazzy, rich in tone. a real shame it's missing from 'the hits', for sure.

I interpret this song as the feeling he was getting from all his pop fame and marketing muscle leading to the feeling of power in many aspects of his life.
Both good and terrible.

I read somewhere (maybe DMSR by Per Nielsen or a long extinct Prince web site) that the song was a product of Sunday morning sessions that occured right before the Revolution disbanded...

I could be wrong though, so maybe an orger can throw a lifeline to me biggrin

co-sign. it sounds like he's trying to woo a virginal woman into sex or at least masturbation. like " give into the power of your lusty feelings, it's what you want and need."

These lyrics, to me, always have suggested that Prince's aim was a bit more worldly than heavenly:

Minor G is the chord of pleasure
It will be played eleven measures
U will see fire, but u're cool as ice
U lie if u say this isn't nice.

i always took that as ... he needed one more verse to finish the song but was out of ideas. but i think the same thing when even prince sings about musical terms.

speaking of prince singing about musical terminology.. what was the earliest example? (singing about MUSIC in general ...as in Just as Long as We're Together" would not count)
