I don't remember him saying that at the end of Prettyman (or Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do...) - was it part of that L4OA commercial? it was printed in Rave's packaging, under the CD tray - the article erroneously claims that he "says" this at the end of the album. unless i've been missing something, this isn't the case.

Ah, I see - I haven't looked at the Rave packaging for a while, and while I remember the sheep's wool part, I didn't remember this - I've written a lot of stuff about Gandhi over the last few years, and never knew there was a Gandhi reference in any of Prince's stuff.

just for the record, here is the official PETA announcement - guess somebody in the press edited it a little too much...
A symbol of humanity and an artist of compassion, Prince is a "prince" of a guy to animals, and he won't eat "anything with parents" because "Thou shalt not kill means just that!" The strict vegan—whose critically acclaimed new album, 3121, just debuted at No. 1—was praised by animal lovers everywhere for giving fans the lowdown on wool in the liner notes of his CD Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. Photographed looking fabulous in faux wool, he closed the CD with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: "2 my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being." http://www.goveg.com/feat...stveg2006/ oh, and no, i don't want to discuss PETA today!

I just wanna second that emotion. The same stupid shit shows up every time veg*nism is mentioned. "If god didn't want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?" "This thread makes me want a steak! " Thanks, we get it, this thing that is important to us is funny to you, move on. That's all. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

and i'm SO not. and this is why i dislike PETA greatly. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Part of the problem might be that some vegetarians are awfully quick to bring up their diets, even when it's apropos of nothing. It reminds me of the man who struck up a conversation with me in a post office parking lot and skillfully changed the subject from the 50 State Quarters Program to the church he attended and an invitation for me to visit. You don't eat meat? Fine. But unless there's some reason I should know (e.g., I've invited you over to dinner), the response inside my head is, "And you're telling me because...?" Yeahhhh.... and that's relevant to the current discussion because....? Maybe Prince unnecessarily shoves it in your face (or has on at least 3 occasions), but the posters on this thread were responding to a discussion on veg*nism. So, justifying put-downs by suggesting that people are being evengelistic about their eating habits is not fair. I don't think Anx does this or the other herbivorous posters. I'm pretty sure I've never made a thing about my diet here, but if it comes up, it's relevant. As for the PETA question: I'm all for direct action and radical activism. I'm not a big PETA supporter, my world-view is somewhat difference to theirs and I'm not big into evangelical v*nism, but I do believe that pushing the edges helps re-align the center. Sometimes u need to shake things up to get a response, "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

even if they're fundamentalist muslims? Oh, and I think that the reason "people believe it's "safe" to razz on vegetarians" is because they assume we won't fight back (unlike fundamentalist muslims...) Well, here we come... no,no, sorry, I didn't mean it Let's all live together like one big happy family! (we're such wimps!) [Edited 5/24/06 5:04am] "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

[Edited 5/24/06 5:04am] good point...the whole POINT of fundamentalism is to tell the whole world about their religion, and why you should be following it as well. i guess anyone can be fundamentalist about anything. but i never hear or see anyone talking about how great it is to believe in christ, with someone responding "yeah, well, i'm gonna go have hot satan sex with my filthy heathen common law stripper wife, then we're gonna sacrifice some kittens to pazzuzu. how about them apples?"

I might have to use that next time someone asks me about being vegan (a friend once asked me "what's it like knowing that every single time for the rest of your life that you have a meal with someone new, they'll ask you about your vegan diet?" - which is pretty much how my life is).
