I love what Susan Rogers said about Prince Susan Rogers, in her interview on Housequake made a very good musical point. She said that she was into jazz, so a good idea for Prince would be for him to strip it down--him, a double bass, piano and drums. He could play in a combo, just juke joint kind of jazz, blues singing. He could get his Ray Charles vibe goin down strong. None of this damn overproduced crap. All you others say Hell Yea!! | |

Whatever he does, all I know is that I've had my fill of commercial pop albums from him. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

----- When he does soul or jazz type music you guys bitch and complain. When he picks the beat up and does comtemporary music you bitch. It really does not matter what dude does someone is always going to complain. Instead of seeing how cool it is that he can do so many styles of music. | |

I love it when P switches it up, and I love it when he does the unexpected musically. "Bring friends, bring your children and bring foot spray 'cause it's gon' be funky." ~ Prince

It's interesting that EVERYONE seems to know Prince's career moves better than Prince does. The man knows what he is doing, he has been at it for a while. | |

I'm not talking about modern jazz, I mean the kind of jazz standards that the greats used to do. This is what Rogers meant. All you others say Hell Yea!! | |

I'm not "bitching and moaning" about Prince making Musicology and 3121. I wanted him to make another pop album around the time of SNOOZE, and he did it. Now I'm just saying that I've had my fill of that.
He made a commercial comeback in 2004, and he made what I consider a very, very good pop album in 3121. Radio won't play his songs anyway, so why still bother? I think it's time for something new, and with Prince not even bothering to heavily promote 3121, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if his next album is something really "out there" that has critics once again calling him insane. That's just the Prince way. Play their game for a bit, then shock the world with the unexpected. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Prince knows what he's doing, if anyone thinks they can do better let them try. Music is a terribly hard business to succeed in and for some reason Prince always manages to keep things going, must be doing something right. There are thousands upon thousands of musicians, talented and all who can't do anything (I'm one of them). | |

I don't think a suggestion of doing something different is a criticism of what he is doing, or of his ability to make that decision. No man is an island. No one gets anywhere in this world without the help of other people. And most everyone has his friends, family, co-workers, acquaintances around him who say, "I think you should do this, that, or whatever." Sometimes the people around us see our own capabilities better than we do. They're not as personally attached as we are. The difference in this situation, and in the case of any person who lives a public life, is that his work and talents are visible to the entire world. That's a lot of input from a lot of different people. For Susan Rogers, as one of a very small group who literally watched him create, I don't find it at all inappropriate to say, "Hey, you've done that. You've proven yourself over and above in that realm. Ever thought of doing this?" It's the kind of thing I would want a friend to tell me. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista | |

It's an interesting interview, and Susan gives her thoughts on what Prince meant when he said that she didn't know him..it's also interesting on how Jesse Johnson
taught Prince studio magic.. | |

Well Prince is an Enigma now, has been around for while now, is part of the cultural fabric in the contemporary music scene, has strong fan base and puts out albums, conmcerts, etc fairly regularly. The real hardwork has probably been done, it was done in the 80;s and early 90;s establishing himself , he had his golden period probably in 80;s as far as albums went and he was really on a role putting out great albums with slightly different vibes eachy time , and yeh he has since been able to keep people interested because he keeps making music. I agree with you about Music Buisiness being hard , Prince is very talented and works very very hard too but it seems he was pretty fortunate in getting the right connections very early in his career at a very early age, there are probably many talented muscicians out there who didnt get the right connections for various reasons, not being in the right place etc etc. | |

I agree for the most part. Prince ran into great people of which there really aren't many of in this business. Music is a business full of guys Musicians and business people who want to be bigger than they are and since they are not they lie, they act they pose. Prince was very fortunate to run into certain people BUT! He also had the ferocious drive and passion to grow that would enable him to shrewdly kick them to the curb the minute he outgrew them, which may sound harsh but it's the right thing to do as an artist. If the people around you are stuck on a level of thinking, it's best to move on. If I'd knew that and been like that I could have saved a lot of time. I was never shrewd though. Give Prince some credit, it was his uncompromising vision that put him where he is, there is a method behind the stories you hear about him being an asshole, you have to be an asshole really as bad as it sounds. People are lazy, they want to drift off in their own direction and they will if you let them. Prince had singular talent and work ethic and faith in himself when no one else around did and that is why he is able to comeback and to continue through all circumstances when we think of Boy George, George Michael and Michael Jackson as nostalgia Prince is still pushing whether you agree with his direction or not, you have to give him credit. | |

Of course he deserves credit, the guy is a freak how many Muscicians put the amount of work and effort into it the way he does, the thing that bugs me sometimes is sure Prince deserves a lot of credit but Im damn sure he may well not be in exactly in the position he is in and has been in if it hadnt also been for lot people around him and people he has worked with, and really how much credit do those people get. Ok I dont mean to be negative because certainly the guy is a genius and he wouldnt get the respect he gets from people who work with him and the music community in general if he wasnt. Im glad Prince has been succesfull because he brings so much to contemporary music and its sooo great to be able to hear, see and appreciate his talent. In general about being succesfull in the music buisiness I think there are so many factors involved it doesnt come down to just having talent, if you dont have the right connections and the right people believing in you or supporting you then from the start its very difficult, so the old cliche about some luck and being in the right place at the right time means a lot. | |
