is the fresh dance mix of pop life on the 12 inch single an extended version of the song or is it truly a different mix?

It's a different mix that contains an extra verse that isn't on the album version, but it's not really an "extended version" so to speak. There is an official extended version (simply titled "Extended Version") that was released, though memory escapes me of which 12" it was on.

Pop life on ATWIAD is an edit of the 9 minute version (called "extended version) which appears on the UK 12" single.

The Sheila E fresh dance mix (US 12") is an edit and remix of the extended version. And its crap compared to the extended version!

oh my god, i never knew there was 2 diffrent versions, i thought the us and the uk had the same version.
now i have to get the uk 12in. anyone got one to sell.
now another question, did all the uk 12" have diffrent versions than the us

The most notable ones for collecting all the different tracks are:

The UK 12" of Purple Rain, as it has the full 7 min track "God". This is the version from the film, not the vocal version on the US copies and The Hits/B-side.

Also, the 12" remix of Paisley Park.

There is also a Uk promo with the remixes of Pope and Pink Cashmere.

Other than those, the US 12" singles are usually the best. All the long versions and usually a better quality vinyl pressing.
