Didn't Prince say he was going to re-record his entire cagalogue?

Is this just another false promise?

Also, how boring would some of his songs be without swearing?

He's already done it.
(he just hasn't released any of it
apart from 1999: The New Master)

Apart from 1999NTM and Soft and Wet ( confirmed in the late 90´s ) and those Muppets songs , which other re-recordings have been confirmed up to now?

I don´t doubt your info I´m just curious.

Don't forget the '95 version of Starfish and Coffee (used on the Muppets Tonight show he was on and floating about on boot), and the snippet of the almost certainly Kirk J'ed version of Raspberry Beret that was used on the same show.

I think something we're all forgetting here is that Prince almost certainly records new versions of songs all the time. Most recent example is The Dance. But I bet The Vault is full of not just one round of 'rerecordings' as in his empty threat of yore, but thousands of extra versions. Deep purple concorde jams.

Prince confirmed that he'd finished the lot in 1999/2000 (I can't remember
exactly when). If you're aware of Soft and Wet being re-recorded I'm surprised
you didn't know this, as it was the final song to be re-recorded (ironic,
since it was the first single). It was announced online that Prince had just
finished recording Soft and Wet, and that it was the last 'new master' to be
committed to tape, and the project to re-record every track from every WB album
was now complete. They had a big (private) wrap party at Paisley Park to
celebrate the completion of the project. They also mentioned that Larry had to
leave the room when Prince re-recorded some of the more 'explicit' old
material (I think they were talking about some of the Dirty Mind album 'new
masters' there... 'Head' and 'Sister' spring to mind).

Prince soon abandoned the idea of releasing 'new-master' versions of every
album as originally intended. But there were a few occasions where it looked
like a 'best of' collection of some of the 'new masters' might see the light
of day.

Is the Purple Medley made up from samples of these songs or was that done completely separately?

Thanks BorisFishpaw, can't believed I'd missed that: it's actually very significant. I must admit I'd be very interested to hear 'new' versions of a lot of stuff... not so much the hits, but I'd be very interested to hear what a new The Continental or Bob George (that's an interesting question - did he re-record The Black Album? The Undertaker?), or All the Critics Love U in New York. It's hard to imagine him improving some of them... but then, he *is* fucking amazing.

If Larry Graham had to leave the room, does that mean he re-recorded them with the dirty bits still in?

Wow, I didn't know he made good on his intention to do this either. When did he begin this project? Did he rerecord his catalog all the way up to Chaos and Disorder?

I'm dying to hear alternates of my favorite songs.

As far as I know... Yes.
They were recorded just prior to his clampdown on lyrical content.

This brings up all kinds of fascinating questions. Did he keep Dirty Mind basic or spruce it up? Are Lovesexy and Gold Experience still over-produced or did he strip them down? hmmm

He 're-interpreted' most songs, some more radically than others.
But there were a few songs which he said just didn't sound right unless they
were pretty much done the same way as the original (Sign Of The Times was one
of those songs)

Again, thanks. I was out of the Prince loop for a few years. Was this info on his site, or did he maybe have an interview in which he discussed this? I would be exremely interested to hear these. It's too bad we may not hear them, but I'm sure the original albums will be re-mastered at some point.

Next question is when & where did the original "the Dance" come from? That's my favorite 3121 track right now so I MUST KNOW!

Hearing re-recorded versions of Prince's earlier albums would be very interesting, such as how close they are to the original(s) and the instruments he used on them.

You believe everything that comes out of the Prince camp?? If history teaches you anything you should've learnt that the prince propaganda machine should be taken with an ocean of salt as the bulk of it is BS.
You believe what you hear on Fox as well? No wonder Bush can continue to get away with all the crap he does if people there are so easy minipulated when fed bullshit.

Well, it's true that we only have Prince's word that he completed the project,
but usually when Prince starts a project and doesn't finish it, or goes off the
idea... he just doesn't mention it again, or pretends like he never did it.
He's never thrown a wrap party and talked about aspects of the making of a
project he hasn't actually done before.

I suggest doing some research before going off on a rant about how others
have been suckered in by propaganda. It's not that hard to do you know. It's
always good to know what you're talking about before shooting you mouth off.
(but I guess I'm old-fashioned that way, and value facts over opinions)

Prince decided it wouldn't work, after he heard a play-back of the new computer blue, without Wendy and Lisa there to rerecord it.

Not a good idea.
P's older than I am,
& lemme tell ya,
the days of me being able to re-release my entire catalogue are becoming fewer & fewer.
