Prince and MJ in the Eyes of the Youth

I've noticed that youngsters (high school kids) in my neighborhood are aware of who Prince is. I asked my neighbors children what they thought of Prince during conversation about music (they like some aweful bands), and the general opinion was that he was very talented but his music sucked.

I asked about MJ, and none of them like MJ nor thought he was particularly talented.

But the thing that I found most interesting is that they make no relation or coorelation between the two artists the way that my generation keeps insisting on doing. It's as if they've broken through some kind of barrier that we couldn't in seperating the two artists.

I think my generation (as the ones before it), suffered from racial coniditioning--that is to say, two successful black men who broke into the "white" market would forever be linked to each other, no matter how different their music or career directions took them. Whereas the youth don't see it that way. The greats (Prince, Madonna, MJ, etc) where like the Rolling stones or David Bowie to us--to some, talented and something to be adored and respected, but to others only vaguely relevant.

It would probably sound kind of standard to them.

One kid is fond of hip hop, and the girl is fond of EMO type of music. Both genres can hit emotional highs (even though I'm not particularly fond of either genre), that 3121 doesn't bother to ascend to.

Prince's 80's albums were not ashamed to convey intensity and desperation which teenagers latch onto, while Prince albums today always strive to be uplifting or intelelctually thought provoking which he never actually does all that well anymore. shrug

They talked about songs they hear on the radio (Little Red Corvette, etc.).

I think the average teen thinks Prince is talented, but weird, and that MJ is just an insane pedophile.

Then again, no one really thinks about music anymore when they think of Michael Jackson. We all just imagine his repugnant face and wonder if he really did stick his hand down little Johnny's pajamas.

I'm 21. When I was at college around the age of 17 I told someone I was a Prince fan. She said "isn't he some guy from the 50's or something?"

The sad thing is I don't think she's particularly dumb. I think most people my age and under the age of 25 wouldn't know a single Prince record.

For the record, she knew and liked a lot of Michael Jackson's music and I often heard songs like Billie Jean, Black or White and Remember The Time playing on the jukebox in the college canteen.

But then I am British and I think MJ has a much stronger European following than he does Stateside.

Probably.
In general, I hate kids. At least kids that are not related to me.
But the teenagers that live next door are good kids, if a bit spoiled.
I wouldn't "hang" with them obviously, but when I'm out washing my car or whatnot and they strike up conversation, I entertain that for a few minutes. lol

Interesting.....my generation.....not sure if it's the same as yours, I'm 27, puts Michael and Prince in the same box too. And I'm the only one of my peers that even likes Prince or thinks he's talented. They laugh at the thought, so I can't even imagine what any teenagers I know would think of him.

They all seem to thing Madonna is just lovely though..... razz

That's exactly what it is...Prince has a strong European following (Sweeden, France, Germany ect...) But in England, he's always had an up and down (mostly down) relationship with music fans...

I'm almost 31 and a lot of people my age don't realize Prince is still putting out albums. When I mention him, they're like, "oh he's still around?" Then I bust out with rolleyes "Umm yeah, he's been releasing almost one album/year since 1978, he had the highest grossing tour of 2004, was inducted into the RRHOF, Musicology won a couple grammy's, and his lasted album 3121 debuted at #1."

I tried to get our 18 year old intern into 3121 but he wasn't really feeling it... I guess P doesn't have street cred with kids from Far Rockaway Brooklyn. shrug

I'm 15...

[[...and I'm experiencing a major non-expressive moment, but I feel like contributing to the thread since I'm a "youth".]]

I like Prince & MJ and a lot of other artists that were popular during the 80s, and even before and after that. I like a wide range of music and listen to almost anything... Classical, doo-wop, rock, pop, etc. I don't think that Prince is weird at all - he is talented, though. It's just hard to find kids my age that are willing to admit that he has some great music. I think that most kids are afraid to admit that they like Prince or Michael Jackson because of what others will think of them... I think that's stupid, but hey, whatever makes them cool...

[[I think most people would have a hard time accepting the fact that they like MJ's music since he's been accused of molestation a few times to many. Most people don't want to like people with that kind of reputation. I think that most kids my age think that Prince either is gay or too feminine. I'd have no problem with either one of those desciptions if they were true.]]

A lot of my peers listen to either rap or rock... I don't really enjoy listening to rap; I think it's kind of annoying. Most of what's on TV and the radio is rap anyway. Kids my age aren't being exposed to other types of music.

I liked 3121. There's some tracks I don't like on it, but I like Te Amo Corazon and Get On The Boat and more songs I don't feel like listing. [[I know I said I didn't like TAC... I just had to listen to it a couple of times.]]

SORRY if what I said wasn't too helpful in trying to find out how Prince and MJ are seen in "the eyes of the youth." I'm not in an expressive mood, like I said.
SORRY if I seemed to be rambling... I kind of do that a lot. lol... That's why most of posts are just a sentence or two. lol
SORRY for any typos...

Later.

Right now, I'm liking the songs from Purple Rain, Te Amo Corazon, Slow Love, and I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man...

That'll probably change tomorrow. What I listen to changes with my mood.

Many of them probably look at Prince and MJ the way many looked at artists like Stevie, Jimi, James Brown, Elvis, take your pick. They likely recognize that they are loved by older folk as legends, but not necessarily relevant to them unless they make an effort to explore their music.

Both were lampooned in the media when they were at their peak, and those caricatures still sometimes stick. People will have to look behind the images.

What Eric Leeds said in Down Beat one time about Prince is the truest statement anyone has ever made about him (paraphrasing): beneath the makeup and high heels and lace lies a truly great musician. Youth who are interested in good music will find their way to Prince, the same way I found my way to artists of prior generations when I was a kid.

Same with MJ. Though he's done a lot of harm (literally and figuratively to his image (AGAIN,IMHO), kids who listen to his music from backinaday will discover a charismatic and talented singer who could really make a good song great, and was second to none as an entertainer.

I'm a few months short of 40 and when I bump Prince from the MP3 to my work computer or in the car, my young troops either hit me with the "he's stuck in the time machine" look....or in that rare instance, seem interested ....it appears to me that younguns these days know a couple of tracks (i.e. Musicology, Black Sweat et al), but aren't into much seriously other than myspace.com....in fact, my 14 year old daughter just told me (when I asked)...and I quote: "We listen to Prince....he's cool....MJ screws little boys!!...everyone walks around singing Black Sweat....."....so at least in middle school, Prince won the war....and contrary to the assertion that P/MJ is a war still active only with "our" generation, kids today are still separating the two....
