3121 Sales -Week 8 : Soundscan/Billboard Top 200 - 05.17.06

..

In its 8th week on the chart 3121 sees a 7% increase this week with 13,081 copies sold , pushing it over the 400k mark to 402,914 .

The increase was not enough to keep it from dropping 13 spots from #80 to #93 this week, as many album saw large increases due to Mothers Day traffic.

At this point, it's just a matter of waiting to find out why Prince stopped caring about the album.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I think it's in one word: Tamar

He's more into promoting her shit than his and it's annoying.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I really, really doubt Tamar can be blamed for this one. There's just no way Prince would compromise his own art for someone else's.

The fact that he is still selling without any promotions or tv appearances is great to me. I know when the 3121 shows roll out, he will sell even more.

Hopefully he realized how crap the album was and is doing the smart thing by disassociating himself with it. Maybe he's even currently making some actual music at the moment and not MTV styled pastiches of pop smear.
No hard feelings.

Yep, it makes u wonder if he signed with Universal just 2 get her signed, hopefully sales will increase 4 3121 when he starts promoting 4 Tamars cd, with appearances on Good Morning America the week of her release and a few others in the works, we'll see.

Prince should has comissioned some remixes. He would get connected with Dance fans! Solidify his presence! Madonna and Janet do this!

so prince killed his own record...again. typical. what a shame that he doesn't care about the work he makes (or, at least, that's the impression given).

Prince's albums always drop off the charts quick, but I can't ever remember him being so completely invisible after releasing an album.

And this one had the greatest hit potential of anything he'd done since 1994 IMO.

Yeah, i think he could have gone platinum again if he took the opportunity to promote the album.
He was flying high with his recent "comeback" into the mainstream, and this album has so many potential singles.
A missed opportunity but he did so on his own terms.

I'm sure Universal is pleased with his decision. lol

honestly, if i were someone in the biz, i would not work with prince. he's too much of a risk. you never know if he's gonna work with you or if you'll be burnt. he doesn't have a large enough pull to be worth the risk. even with all the hype over this record it has still not managed to sell 500k...and its a good freakin' record. maybe if he promoted it the record would have gone platinum by now but he sabotaged his own work. i don't know what the specs of the deal are between prince and universal but he's probably able to act this way because he had very little to lose.

Why does everybody think Universal would be upset about any of this. They went into an agreement with Prince AGREEING to exactly what Prince wants to do and how he wants to do it.

Who is to say that Prince agreed to any kind of promotion, or guaranteed a platinum album. Ofcourse record companies want the best, but this is a UNIQUE agreement between Prince and the record company, so as far as I am concerned Universal knew exactly what they were getting into.

In its 8th week on the chart 3121 sees a 7% increase this week with 13,081 copies sold , pushing it over the 400k mark to 402,914 .

I would say that 7% has something to do with all the Remaining 3121 with chance for ticket on them have been going on sale. They dropped 5 dollars off the ticketed price every where i seen them.

So that's how a musician shows he cares about his work, not by putting on killa live shows for his fans to enjoy, but by hype and promotion? I think Prince would be offended by a statement like that because he has said in numerous interviews that he is very close to the music he makes, and that type of thinking is more consistent with the way record companies operate, rather than how he runs his business.

Furthermore, you're forgetting he gets to keep the majority of his profits and he owns his music 100%, so his money has already been made, not to mention the profits from upcoming shows.

See that's what I was thinking too. On top of that, do you notice how Prince is FINALLY starting to do some kind of promotion next month with Good Morning America? That happens to be around the same time as Tamar's album coming out. This is pure theory here but I think the plan was to promote the heck out of the CD in March into April because it would help Tamar too since her CD was to come out on May 2nd but with Universal moving Tamar's CD to June, it pushed back the promotion stuff leaving 3121 to fend for itself. I heard that there is more planned for promotion but remember, Rave Un2 was promoted almost a month after it came out and it still flopped. This CD is dead and it's a damn shame cause it's a damn good CD. But that's Prince 4 U.

I love the album too,but I'm disappointed that it only sold 44,059 copies.Where's the promotion?! The first single "Ooh Wee" is getting some airplay on R&B stations, but where is the video? Hopefully,Cash Money Records won't screw this up.This CD is filled with strong potential singles: "Make It Hot","A.P.B","Cruise Control".
