well, i think it is my favourite on the album, even over "soft and wet". i think it's a much-overlooked little slab of chocolatey spongey funk. the keyboards squelch and the little climaxes it builds to are nicely judged.
it's one of those songs that contains some of the seeds for prince's future triumphs, and sounds grand in its own right too. when i was in new zealand in 2000 it came on bfm, auckland's student radio station; i said to my friend "hey! this is prince!" and told him when it was from. he said, "so this is what prince was doing in the middle of punk?!" i'd never thought of it that way before. funny little guy from minneapolis honing his craft, playing odd little sexy funk squelches... ('course, he got to punk- or "punk-funk" with dirty mind a wee bit down the line..) | |

That's the "Fear of Pop" song with Shatner on vocals, yeah? I love it.
Especially the way he sneers the line "I knew it was time to move on..." I know u people worthless scum give no heart but wrath of insults a brain-driven wave of destruction your bite is worse than your vocabulary. Shame on you all of you. Go feed your pigs coward. | |
