The Symphonic Tribute to Purple Rain This cd is kinda crazy ya'll!
Anyone else heard it? What do you think? Some of it is pretty cool, like I really like Computer Blue and Purple Rain is decent, but my general impression is that PR does not translate too well into a symphonic experience. A lot of it just sounds kinda silly to me, like the flutey 17 days, the jungly sounding Doves and the guitar substituting for the vocal part on Beautiful Ones, actually that was downright painful to listen to...but it made for an interesting listen nonetheless...you can listen to clips at the link...Erotic City is probably my favorite, haha.. and somehow on Amazon it says "Darling Vikki"..hmm...

I think that particular cd is about the most horrid interpretation of the music you could get. I think something along the lines of the orchestra that played with Metallica or the Scorpions would be much better. I would really like to hear something like that, actually.

I find it quite novel! As well as an interesting analysis like that entire cover of the Black Album..... My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I mentioned this a few months back. "Erotic City" sounds like "Baby Elephant Walk" by Henry Mancini.

I own this CD by the Classic Metropolitan Orchestra:

...it's elevator music; and the cool thing is they have versions of The Question of U and Melody Cool, which I find odd because they aren't popular Prince songs. "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Is it any good? Or just a novelty type thing?

Is it any good? Or just a novelty type thing? I like it; decent production. Of course, there's the novelty of hearing Prince songs as elevator music. It's really cool! "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

I don't know the recording, but for me (and this may very well be a prejudice) almost every attempt of "pop goes classic" or "classic goes pop" ends up as a major disappointment. Just think of that horrible Metallica stuff...

Are you talking about Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos? ...'cause I thought that was pretty cool. My teacher was playing it one day and it caught my ear... I haven't heard many other of these types of attempts, but based on what I have heard I can see your point about these kind of symphonic interpretations being dissapointing.

Currently listening to Melody Cool. They must be big Prince fans, or the producer at least, if they knew this song and The Question of U. It only has 11 tracks:
1999 Raspberry Beret Diamonds and Pearls Nothing Compares 2 U Little Red Corvette The Question of U Pop Life Melody Cool Kiss Thieves In The Temple Purple Rain "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Nope, I meant that S&M record (I think that was the title), the one with that horrible version of "Nothing Else Matters" with strings (uuuh...). I think you're right, that Apocalyptica project was quite cool.
