i have noticed that prince plays guitar solos with 4 fingers without fifth finger.my guitar teacher told me when i was kid that ,
its more acurrate to play with 5 fingers.

so does that way of playing is limiting prince????
to me he is amazing,
he plays notes that other people don't combine,but still
would he play better if he uses all 5 fingers when he solos.

p.s. on hong kong rock prince used all 5 fingers.
eric clapton,jii hendrix ,santana ...those are players who also rarely used little finger.

From memory Prince doesn't use his little finger as much as alot of modern players, he's more of an old school rock/blues player in that sense. I suppose its slightly limiting but then he doesn't play alot of scales or fancy arpeggios that would require using all fingers. He also does alot of string bending which is a bit harder to do with the little finger. Anyway, I don't think Prince is going to change his technique radically now and, as you say, he manages to sound pretty good as it is.

If the fingers you use enable the notes to be played that you wish to be played, then it is neither more or less accurate. It's simply a different way of playing, just as it was a different way of playing when Django used only two fingers.

huh? Prince USES his fifth (pinky) finger quite often, as I recall.

If you use a plectrum it's hard to use more than two ...

I've been on a Prince guitar kick lately and I've been watching a lot his guitar stuff. When he does his fast runs, he's not using his pinky. A lot of cats can sometimes hit the extra note (with the ring finger) to complete the run instead of using the pinky. Prince is doing that. (Pretty much what langebleu said).

That may be his one flaw, his inability to play with his fingers. This is why some country pickers could kick his ass.

I find it weird how he just knows how to make some weird guitar noise, even a noise he has never done before. How does he know what to do? Pretty trippy.

He uses his fifth finger during soloing more than, for instance, Hendrix did. I think it's usage often distincts a self-taught guitar player from someone who took lessons as younger.

i never found someone discussing on the net about playing or not with little finger while playing guitar.
